Manchester United's New Midfield: Tielemans and Santos Set for Debuts

Manchester United are ready to roll out a new-look midfield this afternoon, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in line for competitive debuts in the Premier League opener away to Hull City.

New engine room for Carrick

Santos, a £50million summer arrival from Chelsea, has been a constant presence through pre-season. He featured in all six friendlies, rarely missing a beat, and that workload points strongly towards a starting role in the heart of midfield at the MKM Stadium.

Tielemans has taken a different route to this point. The Belgian joined up later after a post-World Cup break following his country’s run to the quarter-finals, but any concerns over fitness eased when he completed 90 minutes against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Poland. He now looks ready to slot straight into competitive action.

Michael Carrick, heading into his first full campaign as permanent Manchester United head coach, appears tempted to stick with what he has just seen. That could mean the same midfield trio that began the 4-2 defeat to Milan, with captain Bruno Fernandes restored to his preferred No10 role behind the striker, flanked by the two new arrivals.

Defensive dilemmas

The back line is less settled. Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match sharpness has opened the door for youngster Ayden Heaven, who is pushing to start alongside Harry Maguire at centre-back. That call would leave Leny Yoro on the bench against a Hull side who know Maguire well from his earlier spell at the club.

Senne Lammens is expected to get the nod in goal, with Luke Shaw locked in at left-back. On the opposite flank, Carrick faces a straight choice between Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui at right-back, a decision that will shape how aggressively United can attack down that side.

Selection puzzle in attack

Patrick Dorgu adds another twist higher up the pitch. Once viewed primarily as a full-back, he has been reshaped as a left winger either side of the serious injury he suffered against Arsenal in January. His emergence in that role complicates things for Carrick, because Matheus Cunha also does his sharpest work from the left.

Up front, timing has gone against Benjamin Sesko. After three months out injured, he is not yet ready to lead the line from the start. That opens the way for Cunha to operate as a central striker again, a role he has already filled in pre-season.

If Cunha moves inside, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to shift back out to the right of the front three, restoring some balance to United’s attack as Carrick leans on flexibility rather than a fully fit specialist No9.

New faces, big calls, and a manager staking out his identity. Hull away is only the first step, but Carrick’s team sheet this afternoon will say plenty about where this Manchester United project is heading.
