Manchester United Eyes Jarrad Branthwaite as Defensive Target

Manchester United’s recruitment team has fixed its gaze firmly on Jarrad Branthwaite, with the Everton centre-back emerging as a leading candidate to anchor Michael Carrick’s remodelled defence.

Four games into the new Premier League season and the alarm bells are already ringing around Old Trafford. Carrick wants his back line rebuilt with elite, long-term solutions, and inside the club Branthwaite sits near the top of that list.

The 24-year-old has impressed across recent campaigns and has been a long-standing name on United’s defensive shortlist. His blend of size, composure and left-footed balance has kept him on their radar even through a difficult spell with injuries.

United scouts back on the trail

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has confirmed that the club’s talent spotters are now following Branthwaite closely again after his return to David Moyes’ starting XI.

“Branthwaite is somebody who has been high on their list for a long time,” Brown said. “Man United are going to have scouts watching him closely this season, because if he can get back to the sort of form he’s shown before, he will certainly be an option.”

That renewed focus comes with a clear caveat. Interested clubs, including United, cooled their interest when Branthwaite missed 31 matches in all competitions during the 2025-26 season because of recurring hamstring problems. United’s hierarchy want to see an entire campaign from him, start to finish, before committing serious money.

Brown revealed that is exactly the plan: track his durability across the full season, then decide whether to move.

Everton dig in – for now

Any January deal is viewed as highly unlikely. Everton have little appetite to lose their first-choice centre-back in the middle of the season, and their stance has been hardened by previous approaches.

The Toffees already turned away Real Madrid and Manchester City, tying Branthwaite down to a lucrative contract running through to 2030. That extension underlined how central he is to Moyes’ plans and strengthened Everton’s hand in any negotiation.

Moyes leans heavily on the Branthwaite–James Tarkowski partnership to give his side defensive stability. Breaking that pairing up mid-season is not on Everton’s agenda.

United know this. Any serious move would almost certainly have to wait.

Summer test of Everton’s resolve

Behind the scenes, figures at Old Trafford still believe a deal could be forced next summer – but only on one condition. Branthwaite must stay fit and sustain his level under Moyes across the campaign.

United intend to monitor his physical consistency as closely as his performances. If the hamstring issues remain in the past and his form holds, Old Trafford officials are expected to turn long-term admiration into a concrete bid at the end of the season.

For now, Carrick’s recruitment team continues to assess alternative defensive options as part of a wider rebuild. Branthwaite, though, remains the benchmark on their list.
