Manchester United Hesitant on £34m David Raum Transfer

Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a twist, with the club hesitant to commit to a sizeable fee for RB Leipzig defender David Raum as the transfer window ticks into its final days.

United have already thrown close to £150m at reshaping their midfield, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That rebuild has come at a cost. Other areas of the squad remain thin, and nowhere is the gap more glaring than at left-back, where Luke Shaw’s recurring injury problems have left the club exposed yet again.

Lewis Hall was identified as the ideal solution. The Newcastle United defender is widely viewed as United’s top target for the position, and there is understood to be openness from the player’s side. But any move has effectively been shut down for this summer, forcing United back into the market with the clock running.

Raum has quickly emerged as one of the names under serious discussion. The 28-year-old, who produced ten goal involvements in the Bundesliga last season, is heading into the final year of his contract at RB Leipzig and knows his situation is drawing attention.

“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” Raum admitted earlier this week. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”

That hasn’t stopped the speculation. According to German outlet BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, Raum sits firmly on United’s left-back shortlist. Leipzig would ideally like around €40m for the defender, roughly £34m, but are aware that his contract position weakens their hand and could drag the price down.

United, though, are hesitating. The club are described as “dithering” over whether to commit what is seen internally as a relatively large sum for a player approaching 30, with decision-makers weighing up whether a younger option with greater long-term upside might represent better value.

Time is the enemy. The window is closing, and the need at left-back is not going away.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has underlined that urgency, insisting United will not simply ride this one out and hope Shaw’s fitness holds.

“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back. I would not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee. So maybe not a superstar name like Balde because they considered Balde. They had a call with Jorge Mendes one week ago, but the deal is too expensive.

“Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now. Then if they change I will let you know. But, just as a comparison, you remember when Man Utd signed Sergio Reguilon from I think it was Tottenham on loan, something similar.

“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile.

“So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”

So the picture is clear. Raum is on the list, Leipzig are open to a sale at the right price, and United are weighing cost against age and profile. The club’s midfield rebuild is done. Their real test now is whether they can solve the left-back problem in time, or risk another season balanced on Luke Shaw’s fitness.
