The 18-year-old defender is back in training and, barring a late twist, will not leave Old Trafford on a permanent deal this window after holding talks over his next step. What had been shaping up as an exit story has turned into a retention mission.

United have long wanted to secure Kukonki on professional terms. A deal was initially agreed last year but never actually signed, leaving the door open for rival clubs and raising serious doubts over his pathway. He has just entered the third year of his scholarship, and the club are now pushing again to get that first pro contract over the line.

His profile sharpened again when Ruben Amorim arrived. During Amorim’s first month in charge, Kukonki was called into a first-team squad for the first time against Arsenal. The head coach publicly noted how the youngster had “impressed” him and highlighted his maturity, praise that carried weight in a dressing room full of established internationals.

That trust didn’t fade. Kukonki stayed around the senior group and made the squad for both legs of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, gaining valuable exposure to European knockout football from the bench.

Inevitable comparisons have followed. A tall, left-footed defender who can operate at left-back but is earmarked as a long-term centre-back has drawn parallels with Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol. Inside United’s academy, Kukonki has often been used on the left, but the expectation is clear: his future lies at the heart of the defence.

On the international stage, he has already represented England at various youth levels, adding another layer to his growing reputation.
