Manchester United Secures Ederson from Atalanta for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s new Michael Carrick project has its first major pillar in midfield. According to Italian journalist Luca Cilli, the club have reached a full agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson, a move that underlines how aggressively United intend to build on their resurgence.

The deal, as reported on Friday morning, is worth an initial €48 million (around £42m), with a further €5m (£4m) in add-ons. Personal terms had already been settled, and now the clubs are understood to be aligned as well. Barring late drama, Carrick’s first major signing is in place.

Carrick’s United move quickly

Carrick was only confirmed as United’s permanent manager on Friday, but the groundwork for this summer has been in motion for weeks. His caretaker spell forced the club’s hand. No side in the Premier League collected more than his 36 points over that run, and Champions League qualification was wrapped up with three games to spare.

That finish has raised expectations. It has also sharpened the focus of the club’s new power structure: Carrick, director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada. Their task is blunt. Turn a promising season into a sustained challenge on all fronts.

The spine of that challenge had to start in central midfield.

Casemiro, the veteran anchor of United’s recent rebuild, has already played his final game for the club ahead of an expected move to Inter Miami. Manuel Ugarte’s future is also under heavy scrutiny, with one report claiming Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to cash in on the Uruguay international after two difficult years at Old Trafford.

The message is clear. United’s midfield is being ripped up and rewritten.

Ederson: Serie A standout, United’s new engine

Into that space steps Ederson, one of Serie A’s most consistent midfielders in recent seasons. At Atalanta he grew into a driving, authoritative presence, earning praise from former coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who labelled him “world-class”.

Atletico Madrid tried to move for the 26-year-old earlier in the window but walked away when faced with Atalanta’s valuation, especially given he has only a year left on his contract in Bergamo. United did not blink.

They see a ready-made starter, not a squad piece. A midfielder in his prime, with the legs and intensity to suit Carrick’s demand for control and aggression in the middle of the pitch.

Ederson’s omission from Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad, while a personal disappointment, plays into United’s hands. It means he will be free to report for the first day of pre-season once the move is finalised, giving Carrick a full summer to bed him into the system.

Midfield rebuild far from finished

Ederson is a major step, but he is not the only one. United’s recruitment team have been working through a list of targets as they seek to replace Casemiro with elite quality and reshape the entire unit.

The club’s number one option has been Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, viewed internally as a marquee replacement. The problem? The strong feeling that the England international would rather join Manchester City if the champions firm up their interest.

So United are keeping other irons in the fire.

Within the Premier League, they are tracking Carlos Baleba at Brighton, Mateus Fernandes at West Ham, and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. Each offers something different: energy, technical security, or proven pedigree at the highest level. The question now is whether United push past admiration and move into concrete negotiations for any of them.

Beyond England, the club have cast their eye towards the Bernabéu. Real Madrid duo Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde remain on the radar, though they would be far more complicated deals. Both were recently fined €500,000 after a training-ground altercation that left Valverde hospitalised, a flashpoint that has only fuelled speculation about their futures.

For now, though, the most advanced piece of the puzzle is Ederson. A deal agreed, a role waiting, a midfield in transition.

Carrick has his first major signing lined up. The real test is whether this is just a smart addition, or the start of a midfield that can carry Manchester United back to where they believe they belong.
