Manchester United Return to Champions League Against Sabah FK

Three years after their last taste of the Champions League, Manchester United walk back under the Old Trafford lights on Thursday night, expected to win and expected to entertain. Sabah FK arrive as the supposed minnows. United arrive with the weight of history and a manager who has just begun to put his stamp on the club he once patrolled from midfield.

Michael Carrick earned this return to Europe’s elite the hard way. A third-placed finish in last season’s Premier League secured the ticket back to the “top table” and convinced the hierarchy to make his appointment permanent. Now comes the next examination: turning domestic promise into European authority.

Injury picture: Mount close, Shaw a concern

Carrick’s squad is not at full strength, but it is getting closer.

Mason Mount’s return is the headline boost. The midfielder has been back in full training and is pushing to be involved after his latest setback. At the back, Matthijs de Ligt is edging towards the end of a long recovery from a back problem, but this match may come just too soon for him to start.

Luke Shaw is the major doubt. Carrick admitted the left-back is being carefully managed after the 2-2 draw at Everton, where Shaw still found the energy and quality to set up Benjamin Sesko’s goal at the Hill Dickenson Stadium. That contribution underlined his importance, and his absence would force a rethink.

Sesko, meanwhile, is almost at full fitness again after the shin issue that cut short his previous campaign. Carrick has hinted the Slovenian could now be ready to start, which would sharpen the competition in the front line.

Amad Diallo is out until around October with an ankle injury. New signing Carlos Baleba, brought in from Brighton and Hove Albion, is also sidelined and not expected to feature. Manuel Ugarte and Tom Heaton remain unavailable as well.

All of that makes United’s likely XI relatively straightforward to sketch out.

Selection calls: full-backs, centre-backs and the engine room

Senne Lammens is set to keep his place in goal.

Right-back is where the first real decision lies. Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are battling for that slot, but Shaw’s fitness issues may change the picture entirely. If Shaw misses out, one of Mazraoui or Dalot could be pushed across to left-back, with Carrick trusting their versatility to plug the gap.

There is also a wildcard option. Youngster Harry Amass, who stayed at Old Trafford despite late transfer interest, has impressed enough to be in the conversation for minutes. A Champions League opener might be a big stage, but Carrick has not been afraid to lean on youth.

At centre-back, de Ligt’s uncertainty keeps the door open. Harry Maguire partnered Lisandro Martinez at Everton, after spending most of pre-season alongside Ayden Heaven. Heaven could be rotated back into the side here to manage workloads, while Leny Yoro offers yet another alternative if Carrick wants to freshen things up against theoretically weaker opposition.

In midfield, Mount’s return helps soften the double blow of losing Baleba and Ugarte. Youri Tielemans has quickly settled into the side and has formed an effective pivot with Kobbie Mainoo in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1. That pairing has provided control and progression, and there is little reason to break it up.

Andrey Santos, the £48m signing from Chelsea, waits in the wings. He will be desperate for a first major European start, but he may again have to watch the opening whistle from the bench.

Attack: big names, big choices

The attacking structure is familiar. Bruno Fernandes will operate in his favoured central role, knitting play together and arriving late in the box.

Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to start from the right, offering direct running and end product. On the left, the decision may hinge on Sesko. If the Slovenian leads the line, Marcus Rashford could be handed a rest after a heavy workload, with Matheus Cunha then shifting out to the left flank.

If Sesko is held back, Rashford would likely continue from the left, with Cunha through the middle. Either way, Carrick has options, and against Sabah FK he will be expected to find a blend that not only wins, but wins convincingly.
