Manchester United Targets Brazil Striker Igor Thiago

Manchester United have picked up the phone to Brazil international Igor Thiago as they quietly map out their next move at centre‑forward.

The club’s transfer board remains locked on two bigger fires for now – a third new midfielder to complete the summer rebuild and a left-back, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall the leading target. Those are the deals being actively pushed. Everything else, for the moment, sits in the “if this, then that” pile.

Up front, the picture is more delicate. United want an experienced, proven striker in reserve, but only if the pieces fall their way. Joshua Zirkzee is the hinge. If he stays, the club may ride with what they have. If he goes, the search intensifies.

Into that context steps Thiago.

Thiago on the radar – and on the line

Ben Jacobs, speaking to The United Stand, confirmed that Thiago has been discussed at Carrington and that United have already made contact with the player’s camp.

“Igor Thiago has been discussed, somebody that’s Premier League ready,” Jacobs said, outlining United’s internal view of the Brentford forward. He described the current stage as “more of an internal conversation and a normal player call to understand his situation,” stressing that “getting him out this summer will be incredibly difficult.”

That last line matters. United know this would be a hard deal to pull off.

Thiago’s numbers explain why. The 25-year-old is coming off a standout season, scoring 22 Premier League goals and 25 in all competitions for Brentford. That surge in form propelled him into the Brazil setup, where he made his international debut in 2026 and featured at the World Cup. The step up has been tougher there, but his club form has already marked him out as one of the division’s most dangerous finishers.

United have cast the net wide in their striker search. There was a brief look at bringing academy product Danny Welbeck back before he committed to Chelsea. Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have both been mentioned as options. Thiago, though, refuses to slip off the list.

Priorities clear, but door left open

For all the intrigue around Thiago, United’s hierarchy are not disguising their order of business. Jacobs underlined that midfield and left-back remain the main priorities, and that any major move for a striker is likely to depend on Zirkzee’s future.

The club are also weighing up a new left winger, but only if they can find an exit route for Marcus Rashford. Just as with the centre-forward position, it is a case of one out before one in.

So the call to Thiago’s camp does not herald an imminent bid. It signals something else: United doing their homework early, checking the temperature around a forward who has already proved he can live with the Premier League’s pace and punishment.

If Zirkzee stays, Thiago may remain nothing more than a name on a list. If Zirkzee goes, that quiet phone call to the Brazil striker could end up looking like the first move in a much bigger play.
