Manchester City have drawn a hard line in the sand over Rodri – and Barcelona have just crashed into it.

According to The Times, City have rejected Barça’s latest offer for the 30-year-old midfielder, a package worth £51.3 million plus £5m in add-ons, and responded with a blunt message: pay £70m or walk away.

The Catalan club had gone back in with an improved bid, widely expected to be enough to unlock negotiations and move the deal towards a quick conclusion. Instead, City pushed back. Hard.

The proposal was described to Barcelona as “unacceptable”, a word that leaves little room for interpretation. For a player who has been central to four Premier League titles and the 2022-23 Champions League triumph, City are demanding a fee they feel reflects his status as the heartbeat of their side.

Rodri’s contract runs until June next year and he has no intention of signing an extension. That looming expiry has emboldened Barcelona, who sensed an opportunity to land an elite holding midfielder at a reduced price. City, though, are refusing to be rushed into a cut-price sale, even with the clock ticking on his deal.
