Manchester City Set to Renew Pursuit of Enzo Fernandez

Manchester City are ready to go back in for Enzo Fernandez – and this time, they intend to land him.

The Premier League champions are preparing a fresh offer for the Chelsea midfielder this week, with Enzo Maresca pushing through a major rebuild at the Etihad and Chelsea open to cashing in on one of their biggest assets.

City come back to the table

City have tracked Fernandez all summer. They walked away when an informal £120 million “verbal exit clause” date came and went earlier in the window, refusing to hit that figure on Chelsea’s terms. That deadline passed, the clause effectively died, and the story looked to be fading.

It has burst back into life.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano says City are now “prepared finally, after some time, to return to the table of negotiations and to submit a new proposal to Chelsea. So, new Manchester City bid for Enzo is coming.”

Chelsea’s stance has shifted from hard no to conditional yes. The message from Stamford Bridge, according to Romano, is clear: they will consider an exit if the money is right and if they can reinvest to strengthen the squad.

The pressure on their side of the equation is obvious. Chelsea have already started to cash in on senior players, and Fernandez – still with six years left on his contract – represents a chance to bank a huge fee while resetting under Xabi Alonso.

Green light from Enzo

On the player’s side, there is no hesitation.

“Enzo says yes to Manchester City,” Romano reported. “From Enzo there is a green light to the move. From Enzo there is a green light to the contract… a green light on personal terms.”

City sense their moment. Sales of Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez and Rodri, plus Bernardo Silva’s departure as a free agent, have cleared space both in the squad and on the wage bill. Savinho and Oumar Marmoush are also expected to leave this week as Maresca trims and reshapes his group.

The champions have already spent heavily: Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, Mathys Detourbet from Troyes and Jeremy Monga from Leicester City are through the door, with Ayyoub Bouaddi set to follow from Lille. But this is different. This is the marquee midfield piece Maresca wants to build around.

Romano summed up City’s intent: “Manchester City are ready to beat the game and to return very, very strong for Enzo Fernandez and that's a big story because we have to see what's going to happen.”

A strange night at Craven Cottage

While all this swirled in the background, Fernandez lived an oddly muted evening under the lights at Craven Cottage on Monday.

For the first time in a Premier League game since December 2025, he started on the bench. Alonso chose Romeo Lavia and Reece James as his central pairing for the 3-2 derby win over Fulham, a bold call that only intensified speculation over Fernandez’s future.

When his name was read out, the reaction was sharp. The Argentine, who helped knock England out of the World Cup, was loudly booed by sections of the home crowd. He finally entered the fray in the 65th minute, replacing Lavia, but the real noise around him was happening off the pitch.

Alonso was asked about Fernandez after full-time and kept it deliberately vague. “We will see,” he said. “My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

In other words: decisions are imminent.

Maresca reunion on the horizon?

A move to Manchester would reunite Fernandez with Maresca, who worked with him at Chelsea and made no secret of his admiration, publicly calling him “fantastic” and a “leader” for his influence with and without the ball.

Maresca has been careful not to inflame the situation. Earlier this month, when quizzed on City’s interest, he stuck to the party line.

“In this moment I have to give you the same answer since day one, which will be always the same,” he said. “He is a player from another club and I don't think it's correct to talk about other players. I'm not going to say anything about players who are not with us.”

Behind that caution, though, City are moving. The player wants it. Chelsea are listening. The bid is coming.

Now the only question left is whether the numbers on the table are big enough to crack Stamford Bridge’s resolve and send one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders into the heart of the champions’ new era.
