Manchester City Eye Loan Deal for Atletico's Alvarez

Manchester City have thrown themselves into the scramble for Atletico Madrid forward Alvarez, a move that threatens to derail one of the Premier League’s biggest potential transfers of the window.

The English champions have made initial enquiries over a shock loan deal that would bring the 26-year-old back to the Etihad, according to reports in Spain. It would be a stunning return. Alvarez left City two years ago in an £82 million move to Atletico and was expected to be a long-term pillar of Diego Simeone’s attack. Instead, his future is suddenly wide open.

Arsenal’s €150m plan under threat

Arsenal have been leading the chase. The London club are prepared to go as high as €150m (£130m) to take Alvarez to the Emirates, seeing him as a marquee addition to Mikel Arteta’s frontline. Atletico, for their part, are ready to listen.

The Spanish side have effectively ruled out any possibility of dealing with Barcelona, the club Alvarez would most like to join. Atletico remain adamant they will not sell to their Catalan rivals under any circumstances, closing off the forward’s preferred route and pushing him towards the Premier League.

That has left Arsenal in pole position. Atletico have opened the door to a huge sale and are waiting for a clear signal from the player’s camp before entertaining a formal bid from north London.

But just as the path seemed to clear for Arsenal, City stepped back into the picture.

City’s attacking gap – and a familiar solution

Enzo Maresca has been forced to reassess his attacking options after the recent exits of Omar Marmoush and Savinho, departures that have left City light in the final third. The club view Alvarez as an immediate, ready-made solution.

He knows the club. He knows the league. And he has already delivered on the biggest stage.

During his first spell in Manchester, Alvarez scored 36 goals in 103 appearances and played a crucial role in City’s historic Treble-winning campaign in his debut season. On paper, a short-term loan to cover City’s sudden shortage looks almost too logical.

The reality is far more complicated.

Reluctant return, rising tension

The situation around Alvarez has spiralled quickly. He has missed three consecutive training sessions this week, days after being loudly booed by Atletico supporters last Sunday. The relationship between player and fanbase has clearly deteriorated, increasing the pressure on all sides to find a solution before the window closes.

Yet Alvarez remains deeply hesitant about returning to the Premier League. Despite the money on the table and the interest from two of England’s biggest clubs, he is understood to be highly reluctant to come back to England, even as the pressure grows for him to leave the Estadio Metropolitano.

That reluctance is the central obstacle for both Arsenal and City. Atletico are ready to cash in, but they will not lower their demands.

Huge valuation, late-window gamble

Atletico continue to stand firm on a massive valuation that reflects both the fee they paid and the level of interest now circling the player. City’s idea of a late loan, even one with a significant fee attached, does not currently align with the Spanish club’s stance.

Negotiations between City and Atletico have not yet officially begun. For any deal to happen, City must somehow navigate a thicket of financial demands and the player’s own doubts about a Premier League return.

Arsenal, meanwhile, wait for encouragement that may never fully come.
