Manchester City Targets Enzo Fernandez Amid Summer Spending Spree

Manchester City’s summer of excess shows no sign of slowing – and now Enzo Fernandez is firmly in their sights.

City have already thrown down a marker with the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson, a fee that briefly made him the most expensive British player in history. They are also working on a move for Lille prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi, a deal that could again push into nine-figure territory.

That spending spree has come with a clear purpose: rebuild and re-energise a midfield that once revolved around Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, and that may soon have to live without Rodri as speculation grows over a return to Spain with Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Into that gap, City see Fernandez.

City move as Chelsea set the clock ticking

The champions have emerged as frontrunners to tempt the Argentina international away from Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea understood to have set a hard deadline of August 14 for any official approach and meaningful talks.

Wait too long, and the door closes. Move now, and City add proven Premier League quality at the heart of their next evolution.

For former City defender Colin Hendry, speaking to GOAL via Gambler Media, the logic is obvious.

“With what they're trying to replace it does make sense,” he said. “Obviously from the fact that he's come into the Prem and done really really well with Chelsea, or you know as much as you regard how much Chelsea's done. It would be a good addition.

“It's a fair old squad City's getting there now as well, but then again all the teams that are actually challenging for the big prizes have got enormous squads with talent and quality all over the place.”

The numbers will be eye-watering. Everyone in the game knows that.

“He's going to be expensive isn't he,” Hendry continued. “But then again everything's expensive these days because it's not in tens of million, it's now coming into hundreds of million and it's crazy. But that's the way the game's gone for a bit and it's going to continue like that until I don't know, you bring back the three or four foreigner rule. I don't know, I thought I'd throw that one in because that's been there before. But I think it'd be a good addition for City.”

The missing piece in City’s midfield?

Fernandez fits a very specific profile City have lacked since Gundogan left and De Bruyne’s influence waned: a central midfielder capable of hitting double figures in goals while still dictating games.

That deficiency has nagged away at Hendry.

“It has been an issue if I'm being really honest because you need to weigh in with goals from most parts of the team,” he said.

“With the exception of the big man up front, [Erling] Haaland and the amount of goals he scores, but he has been ably supplied with the chances. That's another addition, if he can produce, that can weigh in with 10 goals. If he can hit double figures, then it's a big plus for City.”

City know the sporting case is strong. The financial one is brutal, but familiar.

Personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block. The 25-year-old, who arrived from Benfica in January 2023, currently earns around £180,000 a week at Chelsea and would almost certainly receive an upgrade at the Etihad.

The real fight lies elsewhere.

Chelsea, now under Xabi Alonso, do not want to sell. Not to City, not this late in the window, and not when Fernandez is central to their rebuild.

They are reluctant sellers in the truest sense, fully aware that a direct Premier League rival is circling one of their most valuable assets. Prising him away will take more than a big number on a spreadsheet; it will take a bid that tests the club’s resolve and the player’s ambition.

City have the money. They have the project. They have the need.

Chelsea have the clock, the contract and a manager who has no intention of being raided without a fight.

Something has to give before August 14.
