Manchester City Target Enzo Fernández as Rodri Departure Looms

Manchester City are bracing for the moment they never wanted to face: life after Rodri. And if the Spain international does force through an emotional departure this summer, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández is already being lined up as the statement replacement.

That is the view of former City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who believes Enzo Maresca will push for Fernández on top of the deal for Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi.

City have not exactly eased themselves into this window. They have already thrown £116 million at Nottingham Forest to land Elliot Anderson, and are expected to follow that with an £86m move for 18-year-old Bouaddi. Maresca is reshaping the midfield with speed and conviction.

Yet the biggest move of all may still be to come.

The Rodri question that changes everything

Rodri’s future hangs over the champions like a storm cloud. All signs, Borson suggests, point towards the 28-year-old leaving before the window closes, and City are preparing for that worst-case scenario.

“They do want to replace him if he goes, and that's above and beyond the [Ayyoub] Bouaddi deal, which I think will still happen regardless,” Borson told Football Insider.

City are not just tinkering. They are planning to be “pretty busy between now and the close of the window,” buying and selling aggressively as Maresca stamps his authority on Pep Guardiola’s old empire.

The key, though, is timing. Internally, City are understood to want clarity before they walk out at Wembley for the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August. If Rodri is leaving, they want it done by then. If not, the door may slam shut on any late drama.

“It's a question of whether City are prepared to play that game with Rodri,” Borson said. “Or whether they just go, ‘Look, if you haven't brought the offer by the Charity Shield, we're not selling this summer.’”

Enzo Fernández: Chelsea’s £120m dilemma

Hovering over all of this is Enzo Fernández, Chelsea’s No.8 and a player whose future at Stamford Bridge is far from secure.

Chelsea, by all accounts, would want around £120m to even consider parting ways with the 25-year-old World Cup winner. Real Madrid are watching, as they always do when elite midfielders come into play, but City’s interest is fuelled by something more personal: Maresca’s connection to the player.

Those links to the Etihad are not fading. If anything, Rodri’s situation has dragged Fernández deeper into the conversation.

Borson admits there remains “a question mark over whether Enzo Fernández goes, which would be an enormous transaction. Is he the [Rodri] replacement to City?”

Chelsea are expected to be active right up to the deadline. They are looking to trim, reshape and, in some cases, simply move on. Fernández sits right at the heart of that debate — a marquee signing whose long-term role in West London is suddenly less certain.

If he decides he has had enough of the turbulence at Stamford Bridge since winning the World Cup, City will be ready to test Chelsea’s resolve.

Maresca’s new City, Enzo’s big decision

Maresca is not hiding his intentions. With Anderson, Bouaddi and potentially another heavyweight midfielder, he is building a new-look core, one less dependent on the old guard and more in his image.

And Fernández, with his blend of passing range, intensity and box-to-box output, fits that vision. His numbers last season were eye-catching: 16 goals and 10 assists in 61 games for Chelsea. For a midfielder in a side that often lurched from one crisis to another, that is elite production.

Drop that into a City system that lives in the opposition half and dominates the ball, and the prospect is obvious. He would not be a like-for-like Rodri clone, but he would give Maresca a different kind of control — more vertical, more aggressive, more goals.

For now, everything hinges on Rodri. If he stays, City may decide the price and upheaval are too much. If he goes, the dominoes fall quickly: a record fee, a furious late scramble, and a phone call to Chelsea that could redefine the midfields of two superclubs.

City have drawn their line in the sand: bring the offer for Rodri before the Community Shield, or forget it. What happens next will decide whether Enzo Fernández walks out at Stamford Bridge again this season — or strides into the Etihad as the man trusted to replace the most important midfielder in English football.
