Man United's Left-Back Hunt: Chelsea's Tosin Adarabioyo in Focus

Manchester United have thrown money and energy at this summer’s rebuild. The midfield has been ripped up and reassembled. Yet, with the window ticking into its final days, Old Trafford still feels one defender short – especially on the left.

Michael Carrick has already seen the club commit around £150 million to the centre of the pitch. Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, Carlos Baleba from Brighton. The spine looks stronger, more modern, more Carrick.

But the back line remains unfinished.

Left-back problem, short-term answer?

Left-back has become the urgent job on the list.

Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu, despite his versatility, is viewed by Carrick more as a winger than a natural full-back. That leaves United exposed on a flank where they once felt secure.

Preferred long-term targets have drifted out of reach. One by one, the big names have proved too expensive or unavailable. The pressure has pushed United towards something more pragmatic: a short-term fix.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that United are now actively weighing up a loan move for a left-back before the deadline, a move that would echo the club’s 2023 decision to bring in Sergio Reguilon on a temporary deal from Tottenham.

“I will not be surprised if they [United] end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee, so maybe not a superstar name like Balde, because they considered Balde... but the deal is too expensive,” Romano said on his YouTube show.

He pointed back to that Reguilon deal as the template – an experienced, ready-made option who can step in immediately, raise the level of competition and arrive with international pedigree, even if he is not a marquee signing.

United do not need a headline. They need reliability on the left, and quickly.

Chelsea pair on the radar

The search does not stop at full-back. Centre-back cover has suddenly become just as pressing.

According to talkSPORT, United have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo and are also tracking his team-mate Josh Acheampong.

Tosin, 28, looks increasingly likely to move on from Stamford Bridge this month. He was left out of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham, and his No. 4 shirt has already gone to new signing Valentin Barco – a clear sign of where he stands in the pecking order.

United’s interest is straightforward. Injuries to Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have thinned Carrick’s options at centre-back. Behind De Ligt, Harry Maguire, Martinez and Yoro, the club want one more senior body to shore up a defence that has been battered by fitness setbacks before a ball has truly settled this season.

Tosin could be that man. Reports suggest he may be available for around £20 million, a relatively modest fee for a defender with Premier League experience and his best years still ahead of him.

His journey adds weight to the idea. A Manchester City academy product, he joined their youth ranks in 2003 and stayed for 17 years. He broke into the senior side in 2016 but managed only eight first-team appearances before moving to Fulham in 2020. At Craven Cottage he finally established himself as a regular Premier League centre-back, proving he can handle the pace and physicality of the division.

Acheampong is a different case entirely. Just 18, he is viewed at Chelsea as one for the future – and very much one to keep. United are understood to admire the teenager, but the word from Stamford Bridge is clear: he is ‘untouchable’. Chelsea are not entertaining offers.

So United’s defensive jigsaw heads into the final days of the window with familiar tension. A short-term left-back, a potential move for Tosin, an untouchable talent in Acheampong, and a manager who knows his squad is close but not complete.

The money has been spent in midfield. The question now is whether Old Trafford’s hierarchy can find the right defensive solution before the clock runs out.
