Luka Vuskovic's Impressive Brighton Home Debut

Luka Vuskovic did not need long to understand what Brighton have bought.

On a warm afternoon at the Amex, in a pre-season friendly that will be forgotten by most, the club’s record signing quietly ticked off a significant milestone: his first home appearance, a clean sheet, and the first hint that the hype around him might be justified.

The 17-year-old started at centre-back against Roma, patrolling the first half before making way for captain Lewis Dunk after the break. No drama, no rash statements, just a composed introduction in front of his new crowd.

“It was very nice,” he said of his home debut, speaking to BBC Radio Sussex. Simple words, but his priorities were clear. “A clean sheet is the most important thing for me as a defender, but I think we played very good as a team.”

The scoreboard backed him up. Brighton kept Roma at arm’s length, with Vuskovic part of a back line that rarely looked stretched. For a teenager still unpacking his bags on the south coast, it already feels like a natural fit.

He has only been at the club for “the last two or three weeks”, but those early days have clearly left a mark. “They’ve been really nice and I am enjoying my time here,” he said. “All the guys accepted me really well, so did the coaching staff and the other people at the club.”

That sense of belonging matters at Brighton, a club that has built its rise on integration and development as much as on transfer fees. Vuskovic sounds like he understands the environment he has walked into.

“I think we are a really good group of young people and we can only grow as players and humans,” he added. “I think this will be a really good season for us.”

Those are bold words from a new arrival, but they echo the confidence around Fabian Hurzeler’s squad. The head coach has already seen enough to talk about Vuskovic not as a project, but as a piece that can matter now.

“He’s very mature for his age so he adapts quickly and understands quickly,” Hurzeler said. “If a player can understand quickly then it shows they have real quality.”

That intelligence, that speed of grasping instructions, is what Hurzeler keeps returning to. In his view, it separates promising youngsters from those who actually make it at Premier League level.

“He will be an important player for us,” the coach insisted. “This is just the first step as there are things that he needs to improve, but he has the right mindset and attitude.”

The technical work can come later. What Brighton already see is a defender who brings more than just height and composure. Vuskovic arrives with a reputation as a genuine set-piece weapon.

“He is a big threat as he scored a lot of goals at his previous club,” Hurzeler pointed out. “So that will help us with set pieces which have been very important for us in the Premier League.”

For a team that has squeezed every drop out of dead-ball situations in recent seasons, adding a centre-back who can attack deliveries as well as defend them feels deliberate, not accidental.

One quiet, controlled half against Roma will not define Vuskovic’s time at Brighton. It did, though, offer a first live glimpse of why the club were prepared to break their transfer record for him – and why, inside the Amex, there is a growing belief that this partnership is only just beginning.
