Liverpool Intensifies Winger Hunt Amid Brighton Resistance

The Premier League has kicked off, but the window refuses to quieten. At the centre of it all: Liverpool, short of wingers, long on ambition, and running out of patience.

Liverpool push on Minteh and turn to Madrid

Andoni Iraola has been blunt. His squad needs width. Liverpool have gone hard for Yankuba Minteh and been knocked back twice in 48 hours.

Brighton are digging in over the 21-year-old, knowing exactly how desperate Liverpool’s search for a Mohamed Salah successor has become.

Curtis Jones has already gone, a €30m move to Inter Milan confirmed, with a further €5m in achievable add-ons and a 10 per cent sell-on clause. He had a year left on his deal and, despite Iraola’s wish to keep him, made it clear he wanted out. Liverpool cashed in rather than lose him for nothing.

That exit has only sharpened the need for attacking reinforcements. Liverpool want two wide forwards. Minteh is the priority. Bradley Barcola is the dream – but Paris Saint-Germain want £145m for the France international, a price that borders on fantasy.

So Liverpool have widened the search. The Times report an enquiry to Real Madrid for Brazil forward Endrick. The 20-year-old spent last season at Lyon and was part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, albeit in a supporting role. With Jose Mourinho now in charge at the Bernabeu and Endrick’s future unclear, Liverpool are testing the waters.

Whether Madrid even entertain it is another matter. But Liverpool are clearly not waiting for the market to come to them.

Arsenal lock in Konsa and pivot to Yildiz

Across north London, Arsenal’s summer has clicked into a new phase.

Ezri Konsa has signed from Aston Villa in a £51m deal, becoming the club’s fifth arrival of the window. The centre-back could debut against his former side as early as next week, and he already sounds like a player who knows exactly what Mikel Arteta wants.

“I know he loves defenders who can really defend and defenders who are calm on the ball. His style suits me so I can't wait to get going,” Konsa said, calling it “a proud moment” to join “one of the best teams in the world”. The message was simple enough: “I’m here to win.”

With the defence reinforced, Arsenal have turned back to the left side of their attack, a long-standing obsession for Arteta. The ideal solution was clear: Vinicius Jr. Real Madrid’s star has opted to stay put, forcing Arsenal to redraw their plans.

Attention has now shifted to Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz. The 21-year-old Turkey international sits high on their list as they try to arm Arteta for a dual assault on the Premier League and Champions League. Arsenal had seriously considered Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi before his injury; he remains an option for January, but this window may yet belong to Yildiz.

There is even talk of something bolder. Reports in France link Arsenal with Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, 27, who would only become a realistic option if he drops his wage demands. With Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus already in the building, it would be a surprise move. But the former Napoli forward has been circling the Premier League for years, his all-action style seemingly built for it.

Manchester United close in on Baleba

At Old Trafford, Manchester United have chosen their midfield anchor.

A £70m deal is in place with Brighton for Carlos Baleba, ending a chase that began last summer. The 20-year-old is due to undergo a medical this weekend, with Sky Sports reporting a five-year contract and a sell-on clause for Brighton as part of the agreement.

United open their Premier League campaign against Hull at lunchtime, and Michael Carrick will do so knowing a major piece of his rebuild is finally within reach. The timing is no accident; United want Baleba through the door while the season is still in its opening act.

Tottenham strike for Savinho as City eye Allan

Tottenham have moved decisively in the wide areas.

They have agreed a deal with Manchester City for winger Savinho worth an initial £75m. The Brazilian is set to become one of the headline signings of their summer, with Omar Marmoush also tipped to follow as Spurs reshape their attack.

Atletico Madrid, long admirers, are thought to be out at that price. This despite their own lofty £150m valuation of Julian Alvarez, with Barcelona and Arsenal keeping an eye on the Argentine’s situation. The striker market, once again, looks set to move late and fast.

Enzo Fernandez and City: one last twist?

One saga that looked finished might not be.

Enzo Fernandez was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge after a turbulent summer that ended with a red card and a World Cup final defeat. The midfielder has previously suggested he would be open to leaving Chelsea, and new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca remains a firm admirer of his former player.

Chelsea had drawn a line in the sand, setting a 5pm deadline on Friday 14 August for bids. That deadline has passed, and the club now expect him to stay. Xabi Alonso has spoken of Fernandez “training really well” as he prepares for the new season.

But City have not fully left the stage. An offer close to Chelsea’s £120m demands would ask serious questions of the club’s resolve. With the window ticking towards 1 September, it would only take one bold move to drag Fernandez back to the centre of the market.

A week to go, and no one is done

Liverpool still need wingers. Arsenal still want a left-sided forward. United are banking on Baleba. Spurs are reshaping their flanks. City are juggling exits and replacements. Villa are pushing for a striker. Chelsea are braced for late questions over their biggest names.

The season has started. The real scramble is only just beginning.
