Liverpool's Ambitious Move for Trincao and Diomande

Liverpool are closing in on a £52m move for Francisco Trincao as part of an ambitious double swoop that also targets Yan Diomande, with the club braced for a summer of upheaval in the wide areas.

This is not a gentle refresh. It’s a rebuild of an entire department.

Salah era ending, dominoes ready to fall

Mohamed Salah is set to walk away on a free transfer despite having a year left on his deal, a seismic departure that would normally define a window on its own. At Anfield, it might just be the start.

Federico Chiesa has made it clear in public that he needs to leave to push his career forward unless new head coach Andoni Iraola can guarantee him greater minutes. Cody Gakpo’s future is also in play, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Liverpool are prepared to listen to “important proposals” for the Dutchman.

Talk of Tottenham smashing their transfer record for Gakpo looks fanciful, but there is a more grounded scenario on the table. TEAMtalk report that Liverpool have explored using Gakpo as a makeweight in talks with RB Leipzig to drive down the cost of Diomande.

That is the scale of what Liverpool are considering: sacrificing an established international to land a 19‑year‑old winger they see as a cornerstone of the next attacking line.

Diomande the headline act – at a huge price

Diomande has emerged as Liverpool’s primary target for the flanks. The Athletic report that Leipzig now want in excess of €130m (£112m) for the Ivorian, a staggering figure for a teenager but not one that has scared Liverpool off.

David Ornstein has detailed that Liverpool are in a stronger position than PSG when it comes to agreeing personal terms, and that club-to-club discussions have already begun. The pursuit is serious, and it is advanced.

But one marquee winger will not be enough. Not with Salah leaving, Chiesa pushing for clarity, and Gakpo potentially on the move. Liverpool need depth, variety, and goals from multiple lanes.

That’s where Trincao comes in.

Trincao reborn – and Liverpool move to the front

Portuguese reports have been building for weeks. Correio da Manha first revealed that Liverpool were giving genuine consideration to a move for Francisco Trincao from Sporting CP, and crucially, Iraola’s arrival has not cooled that interest.

The new manager wants him. The recruitment team want him. The numbers explain why.

Since returning to Portugal after a flat loan spell at Wolves in 2021/22, Trincao has rebuilt his reputation and then some. Once a Barcelona prospect who never quite caught fire at Camp Nou, he went on loan to Sporting, then made the move permanent in 2023. Back home, his game has taken off.

Last season he delivered 13 goals and 18 assists in all competitions. Thirty-one direct goal contributions, a left-footed winger slicing teams open and sustaining that form across the campaign. For the second year running, he earned a place in the Primeira Liga team of the season.

That is not a one-off purple patch. It’s a trend.

Release clause on the table

Now, Record report that Liverpool are the “closest” to landing Trincao, with the club ready to activate his €60m (£52m) release clause. The same outlet states that Liverpool sit “top of the list” of clubs likely to make a concrete move this summer.

Sporting know the number. Liverpool know the number. There is no drawn-out negotiation over the fee if the clause is triggered, only a decision over whether Trincao is worth that level of backing in a window already shaped by Diomande’s price tag.

For Liverpool, this is the calculation: lose up to three wingers, and replace them with a 19-year-old phenom and a 26-year-old entering his prime who has just produced elite-level output in Portugal.

Two big cheques. One wide department, completely reimagined.

The Salah era is closing. The question now is whether Liverpool are about to build a new one around Diomande and Trincao – and how bold they are prepared to be to make it happen.
