Liverpool's Summer Rebuild: Pursuing Barcola and Minteh

Liverpool’s summer rebuild out wide is starting to take shape, and it is ruthless.

The brief is clear inside Anfield: add elite one-v-one threat on the flanks to a title-winning squad. No squad padding. No projects for tomorrow unless the price is right.

They have already moved decisively once. Victor Munoz, a 23-year-old FIFA World Cup winner, has arrived from Osasuna in a £34 million deal, a statement signing to kick off the window. But the hole left by Mohamed Salah’s departure on a free to Trabzonspor is too big for one player to fill, and Liverpool know it.

Barcola the marquee target

At the top of the list sits Bradley Barcola.

Richard Hughes is pushing hard for the Paris Saint-Germain winger, but PSG have planted a huge “hands off” sign on him with a valuation of £145 million. Liverpool, Premier League champions for 2024/25, want him, but not at that number. The dance over the fee is expected to run right up to the September 1 deadline, with Liverpool hoping the clock and the market squeeze the price down.

Behind the scenes, the plan is bold: Barcola plus one more wide forward to reshape the attack for the post-Salah era.

Minteh talks crank up

That “one more” increasingly looks like Yankuba Minteh.

Liverpool have tracked the Gambian winger for a long time and have now tested Brighton’s resolve twice, lodging bids of £50 million and £60 million. Brighton’s stance has been blunt: not under £70 million.

The message from the south coast is that Minteh is a premium asset, not a bargain. Liverpool, though, are not walking away. Their renewed focus on Minteh suggests he has moved right to the front of the queue as the secondary wide option behind Barcola.

Mbaye deal collapses under PSG demands

One name is slipping off the board: Ibrahim Mbaye.

The 18-year-old PSG winger, a Senegal international, had been heavily linked with Anfield. Reports last week claimed he had agreed personal terms on a five-year contract, pointing to a deal that was close. That talk was quickly cooled by Liverpool sources, who stressed their interest was only “exploratory”.

Now the numbers have killed it.

RMC Sport reports that PSG want €70 million (around £60 million) for Mbaye, a homegrown attacker who prefers to operate off the right. Liverpool’s recruitment team see a talented prospect with medals already on his CV, but still a developing player. At that fee, they would be paying almost entirely for potential.

Andoni Iraola, stepping into a title-defending dressing room, needs guaranteed output now, not a long-term gamble at a premium price. RMC states that Liverpool have been put off by PSG’s stance and internally rate Mbaye closer to €50 million (around £43 million).

The outlet adds: “Liverpool remain interested in Ibrahim Mbaye, and the player has agreed terms with the English club on a future contract. However, at this stage, Liverpool is not prepared to invest €70 million in the Paris Saint-Germain player. Internally, the English club, which has explored other options, is reportedly unwilling to even go as high as €60 million, given that Mbaye still has two years remaining on his contract with PSG and the Parisian club has made it clear that he is free to leave this summer.”

The pressure of that price tag has effectively ended Liverpool’s pursuit. Interest, yes. Deal, no.

Two wingers, not three

Inside the club, the blueprint is simple: Barcola and one more winger. Not three new wide men, not a scattergun rebuild.

That makes the picture sharper. If Barcola is the big swing and Minteh is the secondary signing, there is no room – or budget – for Mbaye at PSG’s valuation. The renewed push for Minteh is being read as the final nail in any realistic Mbaye move.

Liverpool have already shown they will pay for quality. They have also shown they will walk away when the numbers stop making sense.

The question now is whether PSG blink on Barcola and Brighton soften on Minteh, or whether Liverpool, champions of England and suddenly one of the most aggressive players in the market, are prepared to rip up the script and find a different way to replace Salah’s shadow on that right flank.
