Liverpool's Urgent Search for Senior Centre-Back Amid Depth Concerns

Andoni Iraola has not taken long to identify Liverpool’s soft spot. Before the new season has even begun, the club’s new head coach has pushed central defence to the top of the agenda and forced a rethink in the recruitment department.

A disrupted pre-season has stripped the position bare. In the friendly win over Sunderland, Iraola ended up leaning on 18-year-olds Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe after Joe Gomez limped off inside the opening 10 minutes. It was a useful exercise for the academy, but a stark warning for a coach trying to build a title-chasing side.

Virgil van Dijk remains on an extended post-World Cup break. Summer signings Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are still working their way back from injury. Put together, it has left Liverpool exposed at the heart of their defence and accelerated plans for reinforcements.

Stones and Konsa move into focus

That vulnerability has pushed the club into action. According to sources, Liverpool have intensified work on potential additions, with England internationals John Stones and Ezri Konsa both now under serious consideration.

Stones, in particular, is seen as a prime opportunity. At 32 and fresh from leaving Manchester City as a free agent, he offers elite experience without a transfer fee. His outstanding World Cup campaign under Thomas Tuchel has only sharpened interest, drawing suitors from across Europe, the Premier League, Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League.

Crucially for Liverpool, Stones is open to the idea of Anfield. He is prepared to discuss a move, though he is also in talks with Arsenal and Chelsea as he weighs up what is likely to be the last major contract of his career. Any deal will require swift, decisive work from Liverpool’s hierarchy.

Konsa, meanwhile, has emerged as another serious option. The Aston Villa defender has impressed Liverpool’s staff not just with his level at centre-back, but with his ability to slot in at right-back when needed. For Iraola, who values fluidity and aggressive pressing from his back line, that kind of versatility is gold.

Arsenal retain an interest in Konsa, yet Liverpool have now entered the frame and are actively assessing him alongside other defensive targets.

Zabarnyi back on Iraola’s radar

Another name back in the conversation is Illia Zabarnyi. Liverpool have been made aware that the Paris Saint-Germain defender could become available after growing frustrated with his limited minutes in France.

The situation is far from straightforward and any deal would be complicated, but the personal connection is strong. Iraola knows the Ukraine international intimately from their time together at Bournemouth and remains a huge admirer of his game. If the circumstances line up, he would welcome a reunion.

Dream targets locked away – for now

While the club move on realistic options, Liverpool’s recruitment team continue to keep tabs on two long-standing “dream” signings: Chelsea’s Levi Colwill and Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven. Both fit the ideal profile for the next phase of the defence, and Liverpool would be ready to act if either became available.

At present, that door is firmly closed. Sources indicate that both London clubs have no intention of sanctioning departures, leaving any move for Colwill or Van de Ven highly unlikely at this stage.

Liverpool have also stayed informed on the situations of Antonio Silva and Ousmane Diomande. Silva is expected to complete a move to Bournemouth, while Nottingham Forest are pushing ahead in talks for Diomande. Given Liverpool’s long-standing admiration for both, the club have continued to receive updates, but for now those tracks appear to be heading elsewhere.

The picture is clear. Iraola wants another senior centre-back, ideally one who can handle the Premier League’s intensity and offer tactical flexibility. Liverpool’s shortlist is drawn, the calls have started, and pre-season has already exposed how urgent the job has become. The question now is whether the club can turn opportunity into action before the real games begin.
