Liverpool Reject Bayern's Interest in Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Bayern Munich’s interest in Rio Ngumoha – and they are not even pretending it’s a negotiation. The teenager is not for sale. Not this summer, not under any circumstances being discussed.

The 17-year-old winger, coming off a breakout 2025/26 campaign, has been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria after reports that Bayern were preparing a major bid. The noise grew louder when David Ornstein revealed the German club were lining up a move to prise him from Anfield.

Inside Liverpool, the reaction has been blunt and emotional. Anger at the leak. Disbelief at suggestions terms had already been agreed. And a firm message sent out: Rio Ngumoha is central to the club’s future.

Liverpool fury at Bayern links

Ngumoha’s numbers last season only tell part of the story – three goal contributions in 551 Premier League minutes – but they have been enough to convince Liverpool that they are looking at a cornerstone, not a commodity. He is viewed as one of the most exciting young players at the club, with a clear expectation that his first-team minutes will rise sharply this season.

So when Bayern’s interest surfaced, Liverpool’s stance hardened quickly.

TEAMtalk reported that the club were “deeply unhappy” with claims the Bundesliga side had already agreed terms with Ngumoha and his camp. Internally, the mood has been described as “outrage” at the suggestion that his long-term future might lie anywhere other than Merseyside.

Journalist Lewis Bower, speaking to the BBC, relayed the strength of feeling from within the club after consulting a trusted insider in academy football.

“I believe he said to me it’s from the best possible source, so take from that what you will,” Bower said. “I’d never tweet anything that I didn’t believe to be true, but yeah, it stands by absolutely no chance of that happening.”

No chance. Not a hint of an opening there for Bayern.

No fear of a backdoor approach

Bayern boss Vincent Kompany is understood to be a genuine admirer of Ngumoha’s talent. That much is not in dispute. The question has been whether the German champions might try to exploit the situation with a quiet, off-the-record move.

Liverpool, though, are confident the Bundesliga club will not cross any lines on transfer regulations by making an illegal approach. The Anfield hierarchy believe their position has been made crystal clear: there will be no talks, no encouragement, no softening.

As TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey outlined, Liverpool’s view has not shifted. The club “have no intention of entertaining any possibility” of the winger’s departure. All their energy is going into securing his long-term future, not debating an exit strategy.

Contract already set for an upgrade

Ngumoha only signed his current deal in September last year, a three-year contract running to 2028 after his move from Chelsea in 2024. Under current rules, that was the maximum Liverpool could offer a 17-year-old.

Internally, though, that agreement has always been treated as a first step rather than a final safeguard.

The plan has been in place for some time: wait until his 18th birthday, then move. Once he turns 18 on 29 August, Liverpool intend to open talks over a new, improved contract that reflects his rise in status, his performances in the Premier League and his progression to the England senior team after his time with the Under-19s.

The expectation is that he will receive a significant wage increase and a deal that underlines his importance in the club’s medium- and long-term plans.

The message from Liverpool is unmistakable. Bayern can admire from afar. Ngumoha’s future, as they see it, is not up for debate – it is being built at Anfield.
