Liverpool's Mbaye Deal in Jeopardy as Summer Window Closes

Liverpool’s chase for PSG forward Mbaye is threatening to collapse at the worst possible moment.

With less than ten days left in the summer window, the Senegalese youngster is growing tired of waiting. According to L’Equipe, Mbaye is now prepared to explore talks with other clubs after what he views as a drawn-out, draining saga. In his eyes, Liverpool have allowed the process to drag on far too long.

The problem is clear: money. And a lot of it.

A reported €20 million gulf separates Liverpool’s valuation from PSG’s asking price for the Senegal international. Neither side has blinked yet. Until that gap closes, the deal sits in limbo.

Negotiations between the clubs are said to be inching forward, but Mbaye’s patience is not. His frustration risks becoming more damaging than PSG’s hardline stance. Even team-mate Bradley Barcola is understood to share some irritation at how slowly things are moving.

Liverpool can hardly afford this kind of stall.

Mohamed Salah has gone. Around him, key figures Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson have also departed, ripping experience and stability out of the squad in a single summer. The team’s level already dipped last season; the exodus has only sharpened the sense of vulnerability.

Andoni Iraola walked into that storm when he replaced Arne Slot, who was dismissed after a miserable 2025-26 campaign. The new head coach has seen some business done: Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo have all arrived. Useful signings, yes. But not the kind of headline forward who changes the mood of a club.

Liverpool tried to land one. A €50m bid for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh was knocked back, leaving another target out of reach. At the same time, Cody Gakpo is being strongly linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, threatening to thin Iraola’s attacking options even further.

Strip away the names and it leaves a stark picture. If Liverpool miss out on Mbaye, fail to convince PSG over Barcola and cannot prise Minteh from Brighton, Iraola could head into the new season with some of the most limited wide options in the Premier League’s upper tier.

The timing could hardly be worse. The Mbaye setback lands just days before Liverpool open their 2026-27 campaign away to Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.
