Liverpool Held to Goalless Draw in Pre-Season Friendly

At the AXA Training Centre, a strong Liverpool XI were held to a goalless draw in a 70-minute workout that ended up being remembered far more for one gruesome moment than any attacking flourish.

Alexis Mac Allister, Federico Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas all started for the Reds in what was, on paper, a heavyweight pre-season run-out. The rhythm never quite clicked, though. Como defender Dossena rose for an aerial challenge involving James McConnell and Will Wright, landed awkwardly, and immediately knew something was badly wrong. After having his finger bandaged by Como’s medical team, the 27-year-old shook off the shock, got back to his feet and returned to the pitch. Six minutes remained. They were six hard, disciplined minutes for a defender playing through obvious discomfort.

He saw them out.

Liverpool’s stars kept pushing for a late breakthrough, but Como held firm, Dossena helping marshal the back line to preserve a clean sheet that will feel worth more than a standard summer shutout.

On a day when a goalless draw could easily have drifted into pre-season obscurity, it was the Italian’s decision to play on, bandaged hand and all, that gave this unusual friendly its edge – and offered a sharp reminder of the resolve that will be needed when the real campaign begins.
