Liverpool's Defensive Rebuild: Araujo and Kounde Options

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild might not be done raiding Barcelona just yet.

Ronald Araujo’s surprise arrival on loan has already underlined how chaotic this summer window has become. A deal that looked impossible a month ago suddenly opened up once Hansi Flick made it clear the Uruguayan was no longer central to his plans at the Nou Camp. Araujo, who had been preparing to stay put for the long haul, changed course and pushed through a swift move to Anfield for the season.

For Liverpool, it plugged an obvious hole. Centre-back has been a concern for some time, and Araujo brings both authority in the middle and the ability to shuffle across to right-back when required. That flexibility matters.

Because the right side of Liverpool’s defence has been a nagging headache.

Conor Bradley’s long-term injury stripped away one emerging solution. Jeremie Frimpong’s recurring fitness issues have only deepened the uncertainty. Between knocks, setbacks and reshuffles, that flank has never felt fully secure.

Araujo can help. But he is a temporary fix, not the long-term answer. Liverpool still needs a specialist there, someone who can own the position for years rather than months.

That is where Barcelona may come back into view.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Jules Kounde could be made available before the window shuts, a development that would instantly sharpen Liverpool’s focus. The club has been mentioned among the sides keeping tabs on the Frenchman, with Manchester City and Arsenal also credited with interest.

Kounde ticks a lot of boxes. Primarily a right-back for Barcelona, he doubles as high-level cover at centre-back, exactly the kind of dual-role defender top clubs crave. Since leaving Sevilla, he has amassed 188 appearances for the Blaugrana, trusted across multiple seasons and systems.

His game suits intensity. Under Flick, Kounde has operated in a high-pressing setup, something that would translate cleanly to Liverpool under Andoni Iraola, whose approach demands aggression, athleticism and concentration from his back line.

Flick’s own words earlier this year painted a clear picture of the defender’s mentality. “Jules is a fighter,” he said. “He’s always focused. We’re all human, and sometimes you don’t have your best day, but he’s always fighting. Even when things don’t start well. I appreciate what he’s doing. He has a top-notch mentality.”

That is precisely the profile Liverpool has been targeting: technically strong, tactically adaptable, and mentally relentless.

The question is timing and priority. Liverpool is expected to explore other areas of the squad before committing to a major move at right-back, and any deal for Kounde would be complex, with heavyweight competition circling and Barcelona weighing their own late-window options.

But if the Catalan club opens the door again, as it did with Araujo, Liverpool will have to decide quickly: is this the moment to lock down the right flank for the present and the future, or risk watching a tailor-made solution slip into a rival’s back four?
