Liverpool's Curtis Jones Transfer Situation: Inter Milan and Newcastle United's Interest

Liverpool’s summer rebuild is gathering pace, and one of their own could be the next casualty. Inter Milan are circling Curtis Jones, and Newcastle United might be the club that finally blows the deal wide open.

Inter close in as Liverpool soften stance

Liverpool have already moved decisively in the market. Jeremy Jacquet, Ronald Araujo and Victor Munoz have all arrived, with Araujo joining on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy set at €55m. Defensive depth has been addressed. Now the focus at Anfield is on adding wide players.

PSG duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye sit high on Liverpool’s wishlist. If both land on Merseyside, Cody Gakpo could be allowed to head to Tottenham, clearing yet more space in the squad.

That potential shuffle only sharpens the spotlight on Jones. The 25-year-old is into the final year of his contract, and there are no talks underway about an extension. The Athletic have already listed him among the players who could leave before the window shuts, alongside Gakpo and Federico Chiesa.

Inter have been pushing hardest. The Serie A champions tried to prise Jones away in January and came back again this summer, only to see two bids knocked back, the largest around €30m. Liverpool were initially holding out for something closer to €40m–€45m.

Now the stance is shifting.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter believe Liverpool will sell at around €35m (£30m). Writing on X, Romano stated that Inter have kept Jones as a “priority target” since May and now feel a deal at €35m is possible. The Italian club are waiting for Davide Frattesi to leave before submitting what they hope will be a decisive new offer, but the intent is clear: they plan to go again for Jones before the window closes.

Newcastle’s midfield search could unlock the move

For Inter, everything hinges on Frattesi. They want the Italy international out before they push their chips in on Jones. That is where Newcastle step into the story.

Newcastle are suddenly light in midfield after being forced to sell Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75m. They need reinforcements, quickly, and their first attempts have not gone well. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned them down, while another target, Joao Palhinha, is on course to join Aston Villa.

So the search widens. TEAMtalk revealed on Tuesday that Newcastle have been offered Frattesi, the 26-year-old who could become the key to Inter’s Jones pursuit. Inter’s price is set at €30m (£26m).

If Newcastle decide Frattesi is the answer to their Guimaraes problem, that fee would give Inter the room they need to move for Jones at Liverpool’s lowered valuation. One sale triggers another. A midfielder leaves Milan, another leaves Merseyside, and Newcastle patch a hole of their own.

For Jones, a boyhood Scouser now staring at the final year of his deal, the next few weeks could define his career. For Liverpool, Inter and Newcastle, the question is simple: who pulls the trigger first?
