Lionel Messi Scores Emotional Goal for Inter Miami

Lionel Messi’s right foot found the net again on Wednesday night. This one carried a little more weight.

The Inter Miami CF star scored his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge, striking in the 26th minute against the Philadelphia Union on Aug. 19 and briefly tilting a tense match Miami’s way.

A goal with extra meaning

The move looked simple. The moment did not.

Ian Fray nudged the ball to his right, into space at the top of the box where the 39-year-old waited. Messi took over from there, gliding inside toward the heart of the penalty area, picking his spot as he has done thousands of times. Then came the finish: a low drive into the left corner, beyond the keeper’s reach, to put Inter Miami 2-1 up.

He skipped, punched the air, then turned straight to his teammates. Telasco Segovia met him first with a high-five. Within seconds, a cluster of pink shirts wrapped around him in a tight embrace, a huddle that felt as much about support as celebration.

The match eventually finished 2-2, the points shared. The image that will linger, though, is Messi in that circle of teammates, finally back on the scoresheet.

From creator to scorer

Before he scored, Messi had already shaped the night.

Earlier in the game, he slid into the role of provider, setting up Dániel Pintér for Inter Miami’s opener — Pintér’s first goal in MLS. The assist underlined Messi’s control of the occasion: first the pass to unlock the defense, later the strike to give his side the lead.

Inter Miami could not hold on, undone as Philadelphia clawed their way back to earn the draw. Still, Messi left the field with a goal and an assist, his imprint unmistakable.

Playing through grief

This performance arrived less than two weeks after deep personal loss.

Messi’s father, Jorge, died on Aug. 8 at the age of 68. The man who had been at his side since the earliest days of his career, and who also served as his agent, was suddenly gone. Messi missed that night’s Leagues Cup match as he mourned.

Inter Miami responded with their own tribute. Before kick-off that evening, the club held a moment of silence in Jorge’s honor. In the 10th minute — a nod to Messi’s iconic jersey number — a chant rose in unison, a show of solidarity with their Argentinian superstar.

Messi returned to action on Aug. 12 in the Leagues Cup against León, coming off the bench in the second half as he eased his way back into competition.

Just days earlier, on Aug. 5, he had scored his first two goals since the World Cup in a 4-2 Leagues Cup win over Atlético de San Luis, a reminder of the form he carried into this stretch of the season.

Now, with his first goal since his father’s passing behind him and his influence on Inter Miami as sharp as ever, the question shifts from whether he can play through the pain to how far he can carry this team while doing it.
