Lamine Yamal Shines in Barcelona's 5-0 Victory Against Valencia

Lamine Yamal is back – and he didn’t bother easing his way in.

The 19-year-old lit up Mestalla on Sunday night, striking twice in FC Barcelona’s ruthless 5-0 demolition of Valencia on Sept. 6, his first goals of the La Liga season and a loud reminder of why he’s considered Spain’s next great star.

A statement start

It took him six minutes.

Yamal burst into the box, took a pass in stride and improvised a finish that oozed confidence. Sprinting at full speed, he whipped his leg up to waist height and, with the tip of his toes, flicked the ball past the keeper and into the net. Not power. Pure precision.

The celebration was already planned. Thumb to his mouth, he dedicated the goal to his toddler brother, Keyne, who was reportedly turning four on the day of the match. Keyne watched from the stands alongside their mother, both in the stadium to see the teenager put on a show.

Back from the setback

This is the version of Lamine Yamal Barcelona feared losing when a hamstring injury cut short his previous campaign. He had already torn up record books for club and league before that setback, becoming one of the youngest to shine in Barça colors and in La Liga history.
