Kenneth Perez Questions Ro-Zangelo Daal's Hype After Impressive Debut

Kenneth Perez is in no mood to join the hype train around Ro-Zangelo Daal.

The AZ forward lit up Sunday’s 5-2 win over Go Ahead Eagles with two goals and a standout display, but where many see the birth of a new star, the ESPN analyst only sees a youngster who still has everything to prove.

Perez slams the brakes

On the ESPN show Dit was het Weekend, presenter Wouter Bouwman rolled the clips and the excitement.

"Things are moving quickly for him," Bouwman said as Daal’s best moments played out.

Perez cut straight through the buzz.

"Take it easy, man. I’m really going mad from all that nonsense about multi-talent, great talent," he snapped. "He’s a young and decent player. Let’s wait and see what it all becomes."

No grand labels. No early coronation. Just a firm reminder that two goals in one Eredivisie afternoon do not make a generational talent.

"All those superlatives about ordinary players... Calm down, please," Perez added, making it crystal clear he won’t be swayed by a few highlight reels.

When Bouwman mentioned that Daal is already on the radar of the Curaçao national team and suggested he could also wait for a chance with the Netherlands, Perez needed only one word – and not even a full one.

"Well..." he replied, loaded with doubt and skepticism about any Oranje talk at this stage.

Haan sees a rising star

Not everyone is as cautious.

Arie Haan, working as a reporter for De Telegraaf, watched the same performance and drew a very different conclusion. The former Ajax and Netherlands midfielder even placed Daal in his Team of the Week.

"They kept trying to block off the outside. Then he just went inside. He played brilliantly," Haan said, impressed by the variety and intelligence in Daal’s game.

Where Perez urges restraint, Haan sees opportunity – not only for AZ, but for the national setup.

"It’s good for Xavi that another winger is emerging who is developing so spectacularly," he added, effectively nudging Netherlands head coach Xavi in Daal’s direction.

On Xavi’s radar

That suggestion is not plucked from thin air. According to Algemeen Dagblad, Daal is already on a "watchlist" compiled by Xavi. He is not alone there: fellow forwards Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink and Shaqueel van Persie are also reportedly being monitored by the Spanish coach.

So the picture is split.

On one side, a hard-nosed analyst who refuses to anoint a "multi-talent" on the back of a single explosive outing. On the other, a former international who believes a new winger is breaking through at pace – and that the national team should be paying close attention.

Daal, caught between caution and acclaim, now has the one thing every young forward craves: a spotlight he must either grow into or be swallowed by.
