Julian Alvarez's Transfer Saga: Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona

Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid has taken another sharp twist, with the Argentine forward holding a direct, face-to-face conversation with Diego Simeone just as Barcelona continue to circle.

According to Pedro Fullana, Alvarez spoke with Simeone before Wednesday’s training session, laying out his position amid growing uncertainty over where he will play this season. The message from the player’s side has been consistent: he wants out. And he wants Barcelona.

At the heart of one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas, Alvarez has already made clear his desire to leave Atletico, with the Catalan club identified as his preferred destination. Inside the Metropolitano, though, the stance is very different. Simeone does not want to lose him. Not now, not in this market, and not to Barcelona.

For the moment, the story has moved back onto the training pitch. Alvarez rejoined first-team work on Wednesday, his first full session with the Rojiblancos since returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On Tuesday he had undergone medical tests and trained alone; this time, he stepped back into the group, back under Simeone’s gaze, and back into a dressing room that knows he would rather be somewhere else.

Before the session began, the two Argentines spoke about what comes next. Alvarez explained his situation directly to his coach, who, club sources insist, still sees him as a key figure and wants him to stay in Madrid. The forward, though, continues to push mentally toward a different outcome, one that ends with him in Barcelona colours.

Barcelona, for their part, are still waiting. And waiting. It has long been clear they are the only club actively pushing for Alvarez, but they keep running into the same brick wall: Atletico do not want to negotiate.

That line has been reinforced from the very top. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has publicly backed the club’s refusal to open talks, pointing to Alvarez’s contract, which runs until 2030, and his €500 million release clause. Those numbers give Atletico enormous leverage and leave Barcelona with almost no room to manoeuvre under normal circumstances.

The tension does not stop there. Relations between the two clubs are already strained. Barcelona’s contacts with Alvarez’s camp while he remained under contract at Atletico triggered an extraordinary disciplinary procedure from the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The case has added a political edge to what was already a complicated transfer.

Even so, Barcelona have not walked away. Their interest remains alive, their hope flickering that something breaks in their favour. For now, though, Atletico’s hard line holds, and any deal looks almost impossible without a dramatic change in the landscape.

Alvarez is back in training. Simeone still counts on him. Barcelona keep calling. Something has to give.
