Julian Alvarez Faces Discontent at Atletico Madrid After Villarreal Draw

Julian Alvarez felt the cold edge of the Metropolitano on Sunday.

Back in Atletico Madrid’s matchday squad for the 2-2 draw with Villarreal after a post-World Cup final break, the Argentina forward walked into a storm of discontent, with transfer noise swirling and patience in short supply.

Left out of the midweek win over Malaga to sharpen his fitness, Alvarez was named among the substitutes against Villarreal. The announcement of his name drew whistles before a ball had even been kicked. The boos followed him in, and never really left.

At full-time, while most of his team-mates walked towards the stands to acknowledge the home support, Alvarez turned and headed straight down the tunnel. A scarf was hurled in his direction as he disappeared from view, a flashpoint that summed up the fractured mood.

“The club staff told me that the club decided Julian should not go over with his teammates to greet the fans, and that it was not Julian’s decision,” the Atletico coach told reporters afterwards. “The club made the decision to keep him away and have him head to the dressing room.”

Diego Simeone moved quickly to explain that the decision had not been the player’s.

Simeone refused to be drawn into a debate with the supporters, but he did not hide what is at stake.

“No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans. I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.

The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”

Unity, though, feels a long way off where Alvarez is concerned. His future remains wide open. The forward has been clear about his desire to join Barcelona this summer, but the LaLiga champions are now understood to be looking elsewhere, cooling a move that once seemed inevitable.

That shift has dragged Arsenal back into the picture. With the transfer window ticking towards its deadline, suggestions of a dramatic Premier League return have gathered pace over the weekend, injecting fresh intrigue into an already volatile situation.
