Julian Alvarez’s Atletico future plunged deeper into doubt on Friday as the Argentine missed first-team training for a third consecutive day.

The forward, determined to engineer a move to Barcelona, remains at the centre of one of the most volatile sagas of the window, with Atletico refusing to bend to either the player’s wishes or their great rival’s advances.

Training stand-off as Sevilla trip looms

Alvarez did not join Diego Simeone’s main group again, extending an absence that has become impossible to ignore inside the club. Reports in Spain indicate he could return to the training ground on Friday, but only to work alone, away from his team-mates.

Even if he does report back, he is not expected to feature in Atletico’s LaLiga trip to Sevilla on Saturday. For a player of his stature, that is a loud message.

The tension is clear: Alvarez wants Barcelona. Atletico will not sell to Barcelona. Something has to give, and fast.

Gil Marin draws the line

Chief executive Gil Marin laid out the club’s stance in stark terms on Thursday, making it clear that Atletico will fight to keep Alvarez – or, if they lose him, they will dictate the destination.

“Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay with us, to remain at Atletico,” Gil Marin said. “To compete amongst the greats, you need great players, and Julian is one. If he believes that staying at Atletico is no longer feasible, we will look for an alternative, but it will never, ever be Barcelona.”

That last line leaves no room for interpretation. Atletico are prepared to negotiate, but not with the Camp Nou.

Arsenal wait in the wings

With the transfer window closing on Tuesday night, the clock is hammering down on all parties. Arsenal are working in the background, exploring a deal and sensing an opening that Barcelona cannot exploit.

Atletico, it is understood, could be willing to sell to the Premier League side for the right price. The obstacle is not financial right now. It is the player.

Alvarez has yet to give his approval to a move to Arsenal, and those close to the talks are still waiting for a signal from his camp that he is ready to consider London instead of Barcelona.

“Very confused” Alvarez at breaking point

Gil Marin also painted a picture of a player emotionally and mentally stretched by the saga.

“Julian is really struggling,” he said. “There have been people who have set out to deceive and confuse him, and I’m very sorry about that.

“I know him and we’ve been working with him for some time. He’s a great professional and footballer, but he’s very confused and going through a very difficult time, both personally and professionally.”

So the stand-off continues. Atletico won’t sell to Barcelona. Barcelona remain his preferred choice. Arsenal hover, ready to move if Alvarez finally shifts his stance.
