Arteta on the phone as Alvarez weighs up Emirates switch

Mikel Arteta has spoken directly with Julian Alvarez about a move to Arsenal, according to reports in Spain, with the Atletico Madrid forward understood to be open to a switch to the Emirates Stadium.

From Madrid, the mood around Alvarez has darkened. He was left out of Atletico’s La Liga opener against Malaga, with Diego Simeone explaining that the Argentine was not in the right frame of mind to play. For a player of his stature, that omission spoke loudly.

The tension grew when sections of the Atletico support whistled Alvarez during the club’s first league game of the season. The reaction sharpened questions over his future and gave fresh oxygen to the links with north London.

Asked about the forward’s situation after those hostilities, Simeone kept his cards close to his chest. “We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had,” he said. “And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline.”

Spanish outlet Diario AS report that Arteta has already been in contact with Alvarez to outline a potential summer move to Arsenal. The player is also admired by Barcelona, long believed to be his dream destination, but Atletico have been reluctant to strengthen the Catalan club. That stance leaves Arsenal firmly in the conversation.

Arsenal’s rebuild gathers pace

Arteta has not waited for the Alvarez situation to resolve before reshaping his squad. Arsenal have moved aggressively in this window, adding quality and depth across the pitch.

Ezri Konsa is the latest arrival, completing a £51million transfer from Aston Villa. His signing followed a landmark deal for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, who joined in a £75m move that sent a clear message about Arsenal’s ambitions.

Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis have also been brought in, with Hincapie making his stay permanent after last season’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen. The spine of Arteta’s team is being rebuilt with a clear plan and significant investment.

Speaking before Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry City in the opening match of their Premier League title defence, Arteta underlined that his business was not finished.

On Konsa’s arrival, he was blunt about the need at the back. “We needed one more player, we had seven players in the defensive line, we know that that's not enough,” he said. “We have two long-term injuries, one with Jurrien (Timber), and one with Willy (Saliba).

“And we wanted someone that didn't have the qualities that we already have, so somebody ideally with experience, because as a centre-back in this league you cannot play jokes, we know how important that position is, and I think Ezri brings a lot of qualities that we needed.”

Champions start strong as attack still in flux

On the pitch, Arsenal began their title defence with authority. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all found the net in a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry at the Emirates Stadium, a performance that suggested the champions have lost none of their edge.

Yet even with goals flowing and big-money signings already through the door, the Alvarez pursuit lingers over the window. Arteta has his core, his structure, his defensive reinforcements. What he may still lack is one more decisive weapon in the final third.

If Atletico hold firm or Barcelona finally prise Alvarez away, Arsenal will have to look elsewhere. If the lines of communication between Arteta and the Argentine stay open, the Emirates could yet become the stage for his next act.
