José Mourinho's Warning to Real Madrid Player Raúl Asencio

José Mourinho has delivered a sharp reminder to his squad that wearing the Real Madrid badge is a “24-hour a day” obligation, using Raúl Asencio’s latest off-field incident as a very public warning.

The message was blunt. And it came with timing.

On Wednesday, Gran Canaria's High Court of Justice confirmed that Asencio had been convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol in August. The 23-year-old defender, a Madrid player since he joined the academy in 2017, was stopped at a police checkpoint on August 16 in Gran Canaria and registered four times the legal alcohol limit in a breathalyzer test.

The punishment was heavy: a €14,400 ($16,700) fine and an eight-month suspension of his driver’s licence. He has not played for Madrid this season due to injury. Now his problems are no longer just physical.

Facing the media before Madrid’s trip to Real Betis on Friday, Mourinho was asked directly about Asencio’s future at the club. His answer walked a tightrope between praise and clear disapproval.

“I spoke with him when I arrived,” Mourinho said. “I spoke with him about things from the past. Since I arrived ... I haven’t spoken to him since.

“At Valdebebas, I’d say he’s an exemplary professional. When he was fit, nobody trained harder or better than him. Now that he’s been injured for weeks, he’s the first to arrive and the last to leave. He’s extremely dedicated to his recovery.

“But a Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. Seven days a week. And 12 months a year. Everything you do outside your professional life is still Real Madrid. It continues to damage the prestige of a club that is untouchable. That can’t be touched. And with that, I’m practically saying that ... I’m not happy.

“We all make mistakes. But accumulated mistakes ... That’s a different story."

The word “accumulated” hung in the air. Mourinho knew exactly what he was doing.

Pressed again on the subject, he confirmed that the club has “opened an investigation” into the matter. It was not just a dressing-down in public; it was a signal that Real Madrid are treating this as more than a one-off lapse.

Legal clouds and Mourinho’s patience

Those “accumulated mistakes” go beyond a single night behind the wheel.

On Thursday, Asencio was acquitted by a Spanish court of charges related to the distribution of sexual images of a woman and a minor without their consent. The case had cast a long shadow over both player and club. While Asencio walked free of criminal responsibility, three of his former Real Madrid youth teammates — Andrés García, Ferrán Ruiz and Juan Rodríguez — accepted a one-year suspended jail sentence for distributing child pornography.

That verdict closed a deeply uncomfortable chapter, but it did not erase it from Mourinho’s calculations. The coach must now decide if a defender with this much baggage fits into a squad he is trying to harden, not destabilize.

On the pitch, the competition is already fierce. Dean Huijsen has nailed down a regular place in Mourinho’s back four in the opening weeks. Antonio Rüdiger and Ibrahima Konaté have shared the other centre-back role, offering power, experience and reliability.

Éder Militão is still to return, a looming presence in any discussion about the long-term defensive hierarchy. Behind them, 19-year-old Mario Rivas impressed in preseason and has given the coaching staff another reason to think twice before investing patience and minutes in a player with off-field issues.

So Asencio faces a brutal reality. He is injured. He is under club investigation. He is competing in one of the most demanding positions in one of the most unforgiving squads in world football.

Mourinho has made his stance clear: the shirt does not come off when you leave Valdebebas. For Asencio, the question now is whether he will be given the chance to put it back on.
