Joe Gomez Returns for Liverpool in Carabao Cup Clash

Joe Gomez is poised to pull on a Liverpool shirt again at last, with the defender cleared for a return in tonight’s Carabao Cup clash against Tottenham at Anfield.

The England international has not played a single minute this season after suffering a muscle strain in pre-season. His absence has dragged on longer than anyone at the club would have liked, but Andoni Iraola has now handed him the green light.

“Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It's a matter of deciding how much he can play,” the Liverpool manager said on Monday, leaving the door open for anything from a cautious cameo to a full start.

Gomez’s comeback will not be the only tweak. Iraola has already warned that this third-round tie will look different.

“We will see tomorrow players we haven't seen,” he hinted, a clear signal that rotation is coming and that the Carabao Cup will double as an audition stage.

That message will sound especially sweet to Wataru Endo. The Japan midfielder has been stuck on the fringes so far, named in squads but never actually stepping onto the pitch. Tonight could finally bring the first minutes of his season.

The youth ranks are also pushing hard. Rio Ngumoha, who impressed off the bench against Fulham, is in strong contention to start. Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas are both in the frame as well, each having been limited to recent substitute appearances but now standing on the brink of a first start of the campaign.

Iraola, though, has a decision to make. He can lean into the energy of youth, or he can steady things with more experienced legs and give his newer signings another run.

That is where Bradley Barcola comes in. The forward is suddenly a central figure in the manager’s thinking and could be asked to make his third start in the space of a week, a sign of growing trust and of Liverpool’s need for continuity in attack.

Options up front are tight. With Hugo Ekitike still sidelined through injury, Alexander Isak remains the only senior out-and-out striker available. Cody Gakpo can operate through the middle and may again be asked to shift inside, but the depth chart is thin.

So Liverpool head into the night juggling recovery, opportunity, and necessity: Gomez back in the fold, youngsters knocking on the door, and a frontline stretched just enough to make every selection call matter.
