Jim McGuinness Continues as Donegal Senior Football Manager for 2027

Jim McGuinness will stay on as Donegal senior football manager for the 2027 season, extending one of the most scrutinised second comings in modern Gaelic football.

The decision, confirmed by Donegal GAA on Monday evening, means McGuinness will embark on a fourth consecutive year in charge in his second spell with the Ulster county. His current return had been on a three-year deal with an option for a fourth, and that option has now been activated.

The county board announcement also locked in continuity on the hurling side. Mickey McCann, in charge of the Donegal senior hurlers since 2018, has been handed a further two-year term as senior hurling manager.

“Following a meeting of the County Committee, Donegal confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling Manager for a two year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football manager for a one year term,” the statement read.

McGuinness’s second reign has already delivered silverware and big days out. He has guided Donegal to back-to-back Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025 and took them all the way to an All-Ireland final in 2025, rekindling memories of the county’s surge under his first spell.

Earlier this year, the 53-year-old added another national title to his record, steering Donegal to Football League Division One glory with a final win over Kerry in March.

The summer, though, bit back.

Donegal’s 2025 championship campaign unravelled earlier than expected. They were beaten by Down in the quarter-finals of the Ulster SFC and then lost to Dublin after extra-time in Round 3 of the All-Ireland series, a draining exit that sharpened questions about where this project is heading.

McGuinness, the architect of Donegal’s 2012 All-Ireland triumph, now gets at least one more season to answer them.
