Jamie Vardy Makes Bundesliga Debut as Commentator

Jamie Vardy is swapping the penalty box for the commentary box – and he’s doing it in Germany.

According to The Athletic’s German football correspondent Seb Stafford-Bloor, the former Leicester City and England striker is now a live rights holder for the Bundesliga and will make his debut later tonight for Bayern Munich vs Stuttgart.

It’s a striking move. Vardy links up with That’s Football, the fan-driven channel hosted by Mark Goldbridge of The United Stand, to bring live watchalongs of German football into a landscape dominated by the Premier League.

For the Bundesliga, this is no side project. The league has identified two familiar English football figures – Goldbridge online, Vardy on the pitch and now on screen – as a way to pull British and Irish viewers towards Germany’s top flight, using personality and familiarity to cut through the noise.

Kevin Hatchard, one of the English-language commentators on the Bundesliga world feed, has welcomed the idea of Vardy fronting live watchalongs, underlining how the league continues to experiment with new voices and formats to reach fresh audiences.
