Jamie Carragher Questions Arsenal's Interest in Selling Myles Lewis-Skelly

Jamie Carragher “can’t believe” Arsenal would even entertain the idea of cashing in on Myles Lewis-Skelly, branding the young midfielder “pretty special” and questioning why the Premier League champions would flirt with such a move.

Arsenal, fresh from lifting the title, have gone big again this summer. Christos Tzolis has arrived, Bruno Guimaraes is in the door, and Piero Hincapie’s stay has been made permanent. Ambition everywhere you look.

That ambition briefly came with a jarring subplot. During the Guimaraes pursuit, reports surfaced that Lewis-Skelly – who impressed in midfield at the back end of last season – had been floated to Chelsea and Manchester United as a potential makeweight.

Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, did not hide his disbelief.

“That’s the thing that was a little bit strange about it. It felt almost like Arsenal offered Manchester United Myles Lewis-Skelly,” he said. “It wasn’t Myles Lewis-Skelly saying, I want to leave, or his people putting something out. That’s where the shock came from, not so much the players’ side of it.

“I still can’t believe it.”

Carragher then went back to the games that shaped his opinion of the teenager. Not a pre-season cameo, not a late substitute appearance in a dead rubber – but the Bernabeu.

“Obviously, last season wasn’t great for him for the whole season, but when a young player has already put in performances like I’ve seen him put in at the Bernabeu – maybe over a year or 18 months ago, at left-back, he was running the game at the Bernabeu – and then his performance in the final in central midfield against Paris Saint-Germain.

“You can’t play at that level unless you’re pretty special at that age. All young players have ups and downs. Last season he didn’t play as much as he probably would have liked.

“But his ceiling is so high for the performances he’s already put in as a 20-year-old kid. I couldn’t believe that Arsenal would even think about letting him go. It does feel like a strange one.”

The suggestion was clear: you don’t casually move on a player who has already shown he can dictate games on that kind of stage.

Yet as the debate rumbled on, the transfer narrative began to unravel.

Multiple outlets have since pushed back hard on the idea that Arsenal were shopping Lewis-Skelly around. Caught Offside, The Athletic and the Daily Mail all reported that no such offer had been made to Chelsea or Manchester United.

Mark Brus, writing for Caught Offside, went as far as to say he had “double and triple checked” the story with his sources. His conclusion was blunt: Arsenal do not want to sell Lewis-Skelly, and the player has no intention of leaving.

That also knocks down another strand of the rumour – that Chelsea and United had supposedly “rejected” the 19-year-old.

As Brus pointed out, you cannot turn down a player who is neither for sale nor pushing for a move.

So the picture is clearer now. Arsenal have spent big, their squad is evolving, and the noise around Lewis-Skelly has been loud. But for all the chatter, the message from inside the club and from those close to the player is the same: this is not a talent they are actively trying to move on.

If Carragher is right about that ceiling, the real question is not why Arsenal would sell him – it’s how big a role they are ready to hand him in a side aiming to stay on top of England and crack Europe.
