For a few delirious seconds at Couto Pereira, Jacy Maranhao was living every defender’s secret dream. Then gravity, architecture and VAR all teamed up to drag him back to earth.

The Coritiba captain had just smashed the ball home against Chapecoense in the 2026 Brasileirao on Saturday, a rare strike for a centre-back and the kind of moment that blows away any sense of restraint. He sprinted toward the stands, hurdled the perimeter barrier in one exuberant leap – and vanished.

It shows the 29-year-old re-emerging from the darkness, hauling himself back up from the access area, stumbling onto the pitch, then trying to pick up the celebration with his teammates as if nothing had happened. On Monday, Jacy moved to calm any fears that the incident might be more serious than a viral blooper. Posting on social media, he wrote that the scare had been bigger than the damage.

“At first it was more of a scare than anything else. During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn't really put weight on it, but today I'm feeling much better and recovering well,” he said, easing concerns among Coritiba supporters who had watched their captain limp off after his unintended acrobatics.

Couto Pereira, it turns out, has form for this kind of chaos. In 2014, Cameroonian striker Joel Tagueu also disappeared into the same tunnel while celebrating a goal for Coritiba, another victim of that treacherous opening just beyond the boards. Different year, different player, same hole.

Now Jacy’s fall joins that short, strange list of stadium folklore moments – the kind that live longer than most routine wins or losses. The defender will heal. The three points are already on the board. The clip will be replayed for years.
