Inter Faces Udinese Without Calhanoglu: Midfield Reshuffle Ahead

Inter head into Monday night’s Serie A meeting with Udinese without one of their key pillars in midfield. Hakan Calhanoglu has been left out of Cristian Chivu’s matchday squad after reporting muscular fatigue in the build-up to the game.

The Turkish playmaker, usually the metronome at the base of Inter’s midfield, is sidelined due to adductor fatigue, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio. Inter are treating the issue with caution. It is not considered a serious or long-term problem, but his condition will be monitored day by day.

That uncertainty stretches into the weekend. Inter face Roma on Saturday evening in another important Serie A fixture, yet Calhanoglu’s availability for that match is still unclear and will depend on how he responds over the next few days.

New look in the middle of the pitch

With Calhanoglu unavailable, Chivu has reshaped his midfield. Inter will start with a trio of Nicolo Barella, Piotr Zielinski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan against Udinese.

Zielinski, more often associated with driving runs and creative passing higher up the pitch, is expected to drop into the deepest role, tasked with knitting play together and protecting the back line. Barella will bring his usual intensity and box-to-box energy, while Mkhitaryan offers experience and composure between the lines.

Inter vs Udinese is one of three Serie A fixtures on the Monday slate, alongside Torino vs Roma and Como vs Parma in the early evening kick-offs. For Chivu, though, all eyes are on how his reworked midfield copes without its usual conductor – and whether this is just a brief adjustment, or the first hint of a more prolonged reshuffle.
