Inter Milan Secure Federico Dimarco Amid Barcelona Interest

Inter Milan have slammed the door on Barcelona’s late-window move for Federico Dimarco and are now racing to tie the full-back to a new long-term deal until 2030.

The Catalan club’s approach in the final days of the transfer window did not just test the waters. It jolted the Italian champions into action.

Spanish outlet Sport reported that Dimarco’s name appeared on Barcelona’s shortlist as they searched for solutions at left-back. Talks even reached the stage of a potential swap: Dimarco to Barcelona, Alejandro Balde to Inter. The idea never advanced, but the alarm bells at San Siro were deafening enough.

Inter, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, have now opened serious negotiations to extend Dimarco’s contract to 2030.

Inter react after hesitation

Dimarco is 28 and currently under contract until 2027, with an option for an extra year. That clause, though, has been left untouched so far, a delay the player himself did not hide his frustration about.

“I was expecting the club to call me to talk to me after what I did last year,” he said recently, a pointed reminder of his importance in Simone Inzaghi’s side.

The turning point came away from Milan. In Madrid, on the eve of Inter’s Champions League clash with Real, new sporting director Dario Baccin sat down with Arturo Canales, Dimarco’s agent. That summit, as reported in Italy, has accelerated the process and given shape to a deal that would keep the defender at Inter for the bulk of his prime.

The talks are being framed around Dimarco’s current salary of 4 million euros net. It is a significant wage, but one Inter view as the going rate for a player widely regarded as one of the standout left-backs in world football right now.

Barcelona keep watching

Barcelona have not turned away completely. They are monitoring how the negotiations unfold from a distance, fully aware of their own shortage on the left side of defence.

Hansi Flick has only one recognised left-back in his squad, Alejandro Balde, and the youngster does not currently sit at the heart of the coach’s plans. That gap, both in experience and trust, is precisely why Dimarco appeals so strongly: a ready-made, high-level solution in the mature phase of his career, capable of stepping straight into the demands at Camp Nou.

For now, though, the momentum is firmly with Inter. Barcelona’s late push may have failed, but it forced the Nerazzurri to move decisively to protect one of their key pillars. The next signature on a contract in Milan could say plenty about how both clubs intend to build their left flank for the rest of the decade.
