Inter Milan are moving to the brink of a £30m deal for Liverpool midfielder Jones, with talks now at an advanced stage and confidence growing in Italy that the transfer will soon be sealed, according to BBC Sport.

The Serie A champions have chased the 25-year-old for months. This time, it feels different. Negotiations, once stuck on numbers and structure, have accelerated, and the gap between the clubs’ valuations has shrunk over recent weeks.

Back in June, Liverpool flatly rejected a verbal offer of £21.7m from Inter. Anfield chiefs held out for closer to £35m, pointing to Jones’s Premier League experience and homegrown status, and made it clear they would not be pushed into a cut-price sale with only a year left on his contract.

Inter kept coming. The pressure finally told as both sides edged towards a compromise closer to £30m, a figure Liverpool see as broadly in line with the package Inter recently paid Tottenham for Djed Spence. The Reds are prepared to sell at the right price and have never disguised that stance this summer.

This pursuit has been anything but sudden. Inter first tried to prise Jones away in January, proposing a loan with an option to buy. Liverpool shut that down quickly, unwilling to lose a player they still viewed as a useful squad piece in the middle of a demanding season.

Now the landscape has shifted.

For Jones, a move to San Siro would close a long, deeply rooted association with his boyhood club. He joined Liverpool’s academy at nine, climbed through every rung of the system and eventually broke into the senior side under Jurgen Klopp in 2019. Across 228 appearances, he has chipped in with memorable goals and performances that underlined his technical quality and composure in tight spaces.

Yet last season laid bare the limits of his role. Jones featured 49 times in all competitions but started only 18 Premier League games, unable to nail down a permanent place in Arne Slot’s midfield. He was involved, but not indispensable.

That tension has shaped this summer. Liverpool, conscious of his contract running down, have not rushed to meet his demands in stalled renewal talks. Inter, sensing an opening, have pushed harder. And Jones himself is increasingly drawn to the prospect of a fresh stage, a different league, and a leading role in Simone Inzaghi’s plans.

The twist is that new head coach Andoni Iraola is understood to want him to stay, seeing value in his versatility and familiarity with the club’s demands. But the combination of unresolved contract negotiations and Jones’s desire for a new challenge has tilted the situation towards the exit door.

If the final details fall into place, a homegrown talent who grew up in Liverpool red will soon be walking out beneath the lights of San Siro in black and blue. The only question left is how quickly the deal gets over the line – and how Liverpool choose to replace a player who has quietly been part of their fabric for more than a decade.
