Hull City have ripped up their own transfer history to land centre-back Mendy from Rayo Vallecano, underlining their intent ahead of a Premier League return.

The 21-year-old Senegal defender has signed a five-year deal at the MKM Stadium, with the Tigers holding an option to extend his stay by a further season. The fee is officially undisclosed, but the club have confirmed it eclipses the figure paid for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis earlier this month — a package worth more than £20 million plus add-ons.

Mendy arrives as Hull’s new defensive pillar, and he did little to hide what this move means to him.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” he told the club’s media, speaking with the conviction of a player who has been waiting for this stage. This is not a casual step up. It is the realisation of a long-held target.

“I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart,” he said. “I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed. I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”
