Harding Lady Bisons Struggle in Second Half Loss to Washburn

SEARCY, Ark. — Harding has turned first halves into a weekly stalemate. The second halves are starting to bite.

For the fifth straight match to open the 2026 season, the Lady Bisons went into halftime locked at 0-0, this time against unbeaten Washburn on Sunday at the Stevens Soccer Complex. The pattern held. The result did not.

After 45 minutes of disciplined, backs-against-the-wall defending from Harding, Washburn finally cracked the game open, striking twice in a ruthless two-minute spell to leave Searcy with a 2-0 non-conference win.

Defensive wall holds — again

Harding, now 1-2-2, has made a habit of grinding through scoreless first halves, and the back line delivered once more. Washburn pushed the tempo early, asking questions with sustained pressure and repeated forays into the final third, but the Lady Bisons answered each one.

Clearances were decisive. Challenges were sharp. Every half-chance the Ichabods created in the opening period met a Harding defender or died on the edge of the box. By the time the whistle sent both teams to the locker room, the Lady Bisons’ unusual streak of 0-0 halftimes to start the season was still intact.

The problem came after the restart.

Two minutes that changed everything

Washburn emerged from the break with the same aggression, and this time Harding couldn’t ride it out. The visitors finally broke through in the 57th minute, punishing a rare lapse to grab a 1-0 lead.

Before Harding could reset, the Ichabods struck again.

Just one minute later, in the 58th, Washburn doubled the advantage, turning a tight, tense contest into a commanding 2-0 cushion and effectively seizing control of the afternoon. That quick one-two punch proved decisive, giving the visitors all the breathing room they needed to stay unbeaten on the year.

Chances, but no breakthrough

Harding tried to answer on the counter. The Lady Bisons found moments in transition, pushing numbers forward and looking to catch Washburn stretched, but the final touch never matched the buildup.

Washburn finished with a 16-13 edge in shots, though the second half played out on more even terms, with both sides registering eight attempts after the break. Harding’s efforts, however, never turned into the kind of clear, must-score opportunity that could flip the momentum back.

The defensive foundation is there. The scorelines at halftime keep proving it. Now Harding has to find a way to turn those stalemates into something more.
