Hafiz Gariba's Rise Stalls at First-Team Door under Flick

Barcelona may be short at centre-back, but Hansi Flick is not ready to solve that problem with Hafiz Gariba.

Club sources, via information from Adrian Sanchez, indicate that the highly rated youth defender is not currently viewed as a realistic first-team option, despite the looming demands of the 2026/27 season and a thin senior defensive unit.

It’s a sharp contrast to the noise around him inside the academy.

Gariba has quietly become one of the standout prospects in Barça’s youth ranks since arriving from Escuela Marcet, where his performances had already alerted several major Spanish clubs. Barcelona moved decisively, securing him on a three-year deal in February 2025, tying him to the club until 2028.

Since then, his progress has been exactly what the club hoped for. Maybe more.

A profile that fits the modern Barça defender

Coaches at La Masia have been impressed by his blend of physique and defensive awareness. Gariba’s imposing frame gives him the power to recover ground when beaten, while his anticipation allows him to step in, cut out passes and break up attacks before they develop.

Those traits have made him a fixture for Juvenil A, where he has grown into a regular and a reference point at the back. Internally, his trajectory is seen as encouraging, the kind that usually nudges a youngster toward at least a taste of senior football.

That moment seemed close.

The pre-season chance that never came

As Barça began to map out preparations for 2026/27, Gariba’s name surfaced in discussions over who might train with the first team in pre-season. With the club already light in central defence, the idea made sense: bring him in, test him, see how he copes.

Then a fever hit.

The illness ruled him out of pre-season work with the senior group and kept him from featuring in the friendly against CE Europa. The window that might have given Flick a closer look simply closed.

Once the season’s demands and the fixture list came into focus, the debate around centre-back depth returned. Naturally, so did Gariba’s name. But inside the technical area, the answer has stayed the same: not yet.

Flick’s hierarchy is set – for now

Flick’s pecking order in central defence is clear. Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin are the recognised centre-backs in his plans. Jules Kounde can also slot inside, but the Frenchman is being used primarily at full-back.

On paper, that’s a risky level of cover for a club staring at a heavy schedule across multiple competitions. In that context, Gariba’s situation becomes even more striking. He is close enough to be mentioned as an internal solution, but not trusted enough to be used as one.

Inside the club, there is no doubt about his development. His rise from Escuela Marcet to a key role with Juvenil A and a contract through 2028 underlines how highly he is regarded.

For now, though, Flick is not prepared to lean on him at senior level.
