Erling Haaland Set for Arsenal Clash as Maresca Faces Community Shield Decisions

Erling Haaland will be available for Manchester City’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal. For City, that’s the line that cuts through everything else.

The brief scare came on Thursday. Haaland stepped out of the latter stages of City’s open training session, cameras caught it, and the questions followed. Enzo Maresca batted them away almost instantly.

If Maresca wants City to explode out of the blocks at Wembley, Marmoush leading the line fits the plan. Leaving Haaland on the bench in mid-August would not be a snub, just the cold logic of squad management at the start of a long year.

Behind the striker, the shape is clearer. Phil Foden is expected to operate in the No 10 role, the creative hub between the lines. Out wide, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku bring pace and direct running, the kind of threat that pins full-backs deep and stretches a back four.

Doku, fresh from signing a new contract, looks set to keep his place. He ended last season as one of City’s most direct weapons and has done nothing this summer to loosen that grip.

Midfield Puzzle Without Rodri

The more delicate decision lies in midfield.

With Tijjani Reijnders closing on a move to Al Qadsiah, Maresca needs a new partner for Mateo Kovacic at the base of his side. The options each tell a different story about how City might approach Arsenal.

Rodri’s situation underlines the fine balance. The midfield anchor is back at the club after minor back surgery, but he is still in rehabilitation and this match comes too soon. City must defend a trophy without the man who usually knits everything together.

Defence Taking Shape

At the back, one battle has quietly intensified.

Rayan Ait-Nouri has put serious pressure on for the left-back spot. His form has been strong enough that a reshuffle is on the cards: Ait-Nouri at full-back, Josko Gvardiol sliding inside to partner Ruben Dias in central defence.

That switch would give City a left-footed centre-back pairing with real aggression and passing range, and a more natural outlet on the flank.

Behind them, Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to start in goal, while Matheus Nunes is again likely to feature in the back line, continuing his adaptation to a deeper role under Maresca.
