Braidan Graham and Ceadach O'Neill Join Northern Ireland Senior Squad

Teenage pair Braidan Graham and Ceadach O'Neill have been fast-tracked into Northern Ireland’s senior squad for June friendlies against Guinea and France, as Michael O’Neill leans into a new generation amid a raft of injuries and absences.

The 18-year-old forwards, both uncapped, are rewarded after standout seasons at club level. Graham has been prolific for Everton’s Under-21s, scoring 12 times in 18 appearances and forcing his way onto the first-team bench for the trip to Nottingham Forest in December. He is still waiting for a senior debut at club level, but O’Neill has seen enough to bring him straight into the international set-up.

O'Neill, also 18, has been a regular bright spot in Arsenal’s underage ranks. His progress has already nudged him towards senior action; he has been named on the bench for FA Cup ties against Wigan Athletic and Southampton. Now comes a different kind of step up, into a senior squad preparing to face one of world football’s powerhouses in their final game before the World Cup.

The call-ups arrive at a time of significant change and commitment at the top. Michael O’Neill has signed a new deal to remain Northern Ireland manager until 2032, a long-term vote of confidence that gives him licence to reshape the squad with an eye on the next cycle as much as the next camp.

He will have to do it without several established figures. Sunderland defender Dan Ballard misses out through injury, a major blow to the spine of the side. Paddy McNair, fresh from helping Hull City clinch promotion to the Premier League, is also absent, as is Portsmouth defender Terry Devlin.

The defensive issues deepen with Eoin Toal unavailable after he missed Bolton’s League One play-off final win over Stockport County through injury. In midfield, George Saville and Brad Lyons are both out, stripping experience from the centre of the pitch and opening the door for others to stake a claim.

One of those is Ethan Galbraith. The Swansea City midfielder is included despite not featuring since Northern Ireland’s World Cup play-off defeat by Italy at the end of March. His selection underlines O’Neill’s faith in his quality and his importance to the squad’s balance when fit and available.

There is also continuity for one of the younger faces already on the scene. Liverpool teenager Kieran Morrison retains his place, another signal that this squad is being built with youth threaded firmly through it rather than added as an afterthought.

Northern Ireland will meet Guinea in Spain on 4 May, a useful tune-up in warmer conditions and a chance for the newcomers to find their feet away from the spotlight. Then comes France in Lille on 8 June, the final outing before the World Cup and a stern examination of both the old guard and the new blood.

For Graham and O’Neill, it is a leap into the unknown. For Michael O’Neill, tied to the job until 2032, it looks very much like the start of the next chapter.
