Gavi shuts down Manchester United move to stay and fight at Barcelona

Manchester United came calling with money on the table. Gavi’s answer was blunt: no.

According to reports in England, the Premier League club sounded out a £35 million move for the Barcelona midfielder in recent days, seeing him as a key piece in their ongoing rebuild. The response from the La Masia graduate left little room for negotiation. He does not want to leave Barça.

United’s midfield rebuild hits a wall

United, now under Michael Carrick, have been reshaping the heart of their team. Around £85 million has already gone into Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but the plan included a third major addition in midfield. That target was Gavi.

The Old Trafford hierarchy were prepared to push to around €41 million for the Spain international, convinced his intensity and profile would fit the Premier League and their new project. On paper, it made sense. On the player’s side, it never got off the ground.

Door firmly closed

From Gavi’s camp, the message is simple: he is staying put.

The 20-year-old has told Barcelona he has no intention of changing clubs and no interest in a move to Old Trafford. He believes his story at Barça is far from finished and that he can reclaim a central role under new coach Hansi Flick.

That conviction comes after a difficult year. A serious knee injury cut his season short and kept him out for six months, halting the momentum that had made him one of La Masia’s standout success stories. Even so, his commitment to the club has not shifted.

Gavi joined Barcelona at 11. He grew through the ranks, broke into the first team as a teenager and quickly became a symbol of the academy’s latest generation. Walking away now, just as a new era begins under Flick, is not in his plans.

Flick’s trust and a crowded midfield

The landscape around him has changed. The arrival of Rodri has raised the level of competition in the middle of the pitch and handed Flick a deep pool of options. Barcelona’s midfield is now packed with players capable of operating in several roles, and minutes will have to be earned.

Yet that signing does not alter Gavi’s stance or his status internally. Flick is understood to trust the academy graduate, and the player wants to answer that faith where it matters most: on the pitch.

His target is clear. Regain his importance in the side, force his way back into the core of Flick’s project and show that, even in a busier midfield, there is still a place for a relentless La Masia product who has no intention of trading Barcelona for Manchester.
