Gabriel Gudmundsson's Return to Leeds United Action
Gabriel Gudmundsson’s return to competitive action for Leeds United has been a long time coming. For months, his name sat on team sheets only in theory, a reminder of what Daniel Farke was missing rather than a genuine option.
That wait ended with Leeds’ 1-1 draw at Brighton, his first appearance for the club since April.
The 27-year-old has spent that gap wrestling with a hamstring injury and the grind that comes with it. No crowds. No adrenaline. Just repetition and rehab. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Gudmundsson was quick to push the spotlight away from himself and onto the staff who pulled him back to fitness, praising the physio team for steering him through the recovery.
If Brighton away is a harsh reintroduction, he didn’t show any signs of shrinking from it.
“I feel Brighton is a difficult place to come,” he said, a line that carries extra weight given what happened there last season. Leeds were well beaten on that visit. This time, they left with a point and a sense that something is shifting. “Last season we lost here quite badly, so I think we are doing some good stuff.”
That “good stuff” is there in the numbers. Farke’s side are unbeaten in their first four matches of the season, a platform rather than a finished product, but a clear change from the fragility of previous campaigns.
The schedule doesn’t ease up. Next comes Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, a tie that will test both the depth of this Leeds squad and the sharpness of those, like Gudmundsson, feeling their way back into the rhythm of competition.
For him, though, this is only the start.
“The process starts now, and it is going to get better and better for us,” he said.
After months on the treatment table, he finally has the chance to prove it on the pitch.
