Evan Ferguson's Comeback: Brighton's Young Striker Edging Closer to Return

Evan Ferguson is edging back towards the Brighton first team, but his manager Fabian Hurzeler refuses to circle a date on the calendar.

The Republic of Ireland striker has been out since last season after an ankle injury cut short his loan spell at Roma, where he struck five times in 22 games in Serie A. Surgery in March fixed the problem. The long, lonely rehab has taken care of the rest.

Brighton have started the new Premier League campaign at full tilt, thumping Aston Villa 4-0 before being dragged into a 4-3 thriller and defeat at Chelsea. Through both games, Ferguson has remained on the outside, working his way back to full fitness.

“He’s getting closer,” Hurzeler said ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Leeds United. “He’s in his rehab. I can’t give a clear timescale for when he will be back.”

No promises. No countdown. Just a clear reminder of what Brighton believe they’re getting back.

“Everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing. He proved it a few years ago here at Brighton,” Hurzeler continued. “I think he was one of the best strikers in the Premier League, so hopefully he can get back on track.”

At 18, the Meath native ripped through defences and into the record books, becoming the first teenager since Wayne Rooney to hit 10 Premier League goals in a calendar year. The talent was obvious, the trajectory steep. The problem has been staying on the pitch.

Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his rise, and Hurzeler is acutely aware that this comeback is about more than a healed ankle.

“Hopefully he gets his mind in the right position,” the Brighton boss said. “I think that’s the key after these kinds of injuries, that you get back on track and have complete trust in your own body.

“Only if you feel really safe and trust your own body are you capable of playing at the highest level. That’s the main focus now, and then let’s see what happens.”

Brighton’s attack is already humming. If Ferguson returns with that trust restored, the conversation around their season could change very quickly.
