"It was simply about today's match," he said after the win over Luton. "We have other players who need minutes to play."

He stressed Fernández’s attitude behind the scenes, describing the Argentina international as "extremely professional" and a good trainer, keen to underline that there has been no breakdown in relations.

The timing of the decision was no accident. Asked when he had settled on leaving Fernández out, Alonso was blunt: "Wednesday evening. It's a decision I made."

That clarity on the process did little to cool the speculation. In England, Manchester City are understood to be weighing up a move for the World Cup winner before the window shuts, and every selection call now feels like a data point in a live transfer saga.

Alonso, though, kept the door wide open for an immediate return. He namechecked Sunday’s league fixture against Brighton at Stamford Bridge as a possible stage for Fernández to step back in.

"Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that," Alonso said. "Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We'll see on Sunday."
