England Boosted by Guehi and Rice in Miami Heat

England’s preparations for their World Cup quarter-final against Norway received a significant lift in the Miami sun, with Marc Guehi and Declan Rice both returning to full training on the eve of the tie.

Guehi, who had been a major doubt after reports of a hamstring problem, moved freely in the session at Inter Miami’s training base, a reassuring sight for Thomas Tuchel as he finalises his back line. Rice, laid low by a stomach bug in the days following last weekend’s win over Mexico, was also back among the group, involved throughout.

The mood around the camp shifted with them. Two potential absentees suddenly looked ready for battle.

The good news did not stop there. Reece James, working his way back from a hamstring injury of his own, joined in and came through the session, putting him on course to be available for selection. His presence offers Tuchel fresh options on the right, both in and out of possession, at a stage of the tournament where small tactical tweaks can decide entire campaigns.

Only Jordan Henderson sat this one out. The midfielder has begun his recovery from wrist surgery after injuring himself in the celebrations that followed England’s famous victory at the Estadio Azteca. He will not feature against Norway, but he remains embedded in the group in Miami, taking on a supporting role around the squad as one of the senior voices in the dressing room.

If the medical updates soothed England’s staff, the conditions did anything but. The squad trained in 33-degree heat, the temperature cranked up further by heavy Florida humidity that wrapped itself around every sprint and passing drill. This is exactly what they had planned for, yet the reality still hit hard.

England had spent much of the tournament so far shielded from such extremes: two games indoors, three more played in rain. Miami is different. Here, every run tests the lungs, every press drains the legs a little quicker.

Tuchel and his players knew this was coming when they held their pre-tournament camp in Florida. Now they are back, with a place in the last four on the line, the preparation colliding with the moment.

Fit bodies, fierce heat, and a quarter-final in waiting. The stage in Miami could hardly feel more unforgiving — or more decisive.
