Eli Junior Kroupi Receives Ballon d'Or Young Talent Nomination

Joe Partington says Eli Junior Kroupi has finally been given the “rightful recognition” his breakout season deserved after the Bournemouth forward was shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d'Or Men's Young Talent of the Year award.

Kroupi, just 20 and currently sidelined with a broken foot, hit 13 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions last season, a return that has propelled him into the conversation with the elite of his age group.

On BBC Radio Solent’s Cherries Unpicked podcast, former Bournemouth defender Partington could barely hide his amazement.

“It is just mad, isn't it?” he said. “We've had some exceptionally talented young players at this football club, but never one who has been involved in the Golden Boy award at the Ballon d'Or.”

For Bournemouth, the nomination is both a badge of honour and a sharp reminder of what they are missing.

Kroupi’s absence has left a clear void. Partington described “a big hole in the team”, the kind that goes beyond numbers and heatmaps. The forward’s willingness to improvise and disrupt has been stripped from a side that, in his view, now looks too controlled.

“Eli Junior Kroupi did perform exceptionally well last season. Bournemouth really are missing him at the moment,” Partington said. “They are missing him being a slight maverick, being a bit more creative and being able to take risks.

“Bournemouth feel a bit safe in their playing style at the moment, and he is a bums-off-seats kind of player. When he gets the ball in and around the box, people expect him to beat the goalkeeper or hit the target.”

The Ballon d'Or shortlist offers a different kind of validation. For Kroupi, it underlines how far he has come in a short time. For the club, it underpins a recruitment strategy that has quietly started to deliver.

“It is rightful recognition for him to be included in those top 10 best young players in the world,” Partington said. “Will he win the award? I would say the likelihood is probably not, but it is great confirmation Bournemouth's recruitment team continue to hit the mark.”

Now the focus turns to recovery. The broken foot has stalled Kroupi’s momentum, but not the expectations around him.

“Hopefully he is able to overcome this foot injury now and recapture the form that put him in this position in the first place,” Partington added.

If he does, Bournemouth may not just have a nominee on their hands next time. They might have a genuine contender.
